Did you spot all nine leaf insects in today’s photo from the New York Times taken by Hsin-hsiung Chen? Here’s the reveal (click photo to enlarge):
If you can’t see them, it’s a clue that sharp-sighted birds, who hunt these using vision, can’t easily see them either.

I missed one and had one false positive
Very cool. The link to the NYT article includes a picture of a male. It is not quite a twig mimic. No idea why they would look so different.

Wow. I could find just 5 in the photo, and if I saw this in the wild I’d go nuts from sheer excitement.
I missed the extreme left one and the extreme right one. But then, I’m not a bird.
