Photos of readers

Okay, this is the last submission in the tank, so if you want everyone to have a butcher’s at your boat race, send me one or two photos of you doing something interesting, or showing something about your life, and a brief paragraph describing them.

Today we have an old friend of mine, Dr. Avis James, who teaches biology at New Mexico State University and was named Avis because her mom’s an ornithologist.  Avis’s words are indented:

I am not a selfie type of person, but will submit these two photos.

First, me in ZOOM.  This is what I look like to my students these days. I so miss face-to-face interactions and field trips.  But we are having as much fun as we can!  We are talking about evolution.

Second, me the Kitty Whisperer.  I’m discussing tuna fish with my neighbor’s kitten “Socks”.

… to have a butcher’s at your boat race …

And a right royal bit o’ slang that is, old boy.

You certainly have a student there who is paying close attention. Success.

… was named Avis because her mom’s an ornithologist.

Not because she tries harder? 🙂

Is your name pronounced like the rental car firm or Ahvis?

      • Posted June 13, 2020 at 3:03 pm | Permalink

My mother pronounces it with a hard A as in the rent-a-car place, but a lot of people say Ah-vis. I will answer!

I don’t think I’d like zooming as a professor either (or student). Gotta do what ya gotta do though.

Gawd that kitty is CUTE! Love the socks.

    Teaching evolution must be enjoyable.
Even the kitty is interested. 😎

    butchers = butcher’s hook = look

    boat race = face

I enjoy the photos of readers including this present one, remarks by the subject, and the replies.

There is at least one person who would positively consider participating directly in the readers’ photos, but who has no idea how to do so. Success at that would of course extend the series at least by one day.

Perhaps someone could respond to this with what is likely the very obvious method, but which escapes that person. However he avoids Twitter, Facebook and other social media completely, so methods involving those would be of no use. Email is all that’s needed, with a little help from friends who use smartphones for more than just photos and wake-up alarms.

That wording above should make it obvious that I’m a person who dislikes any direct admission of ignorance about how to do anything!

Not to worry. Under #10, Da Roolz page it is spelled out: “My email is easily available via elementary Googling. I can’t, of course, promise to use everything, but I do look at what people send me.”

A simple google search of “Jerry Coyne, university of Chicago, evolution, email,” should get you there.
