Even Professor Ceiling Cat must take a break sometimes, and so I’m celebrating the first day of Coynezaa by taking most of the day off. I’ll put up a few stats on the website as I may not be posting on December 31 or January 1, the traditional time to review the data. I will note that January 14 will be the tenth anniversary of the site; it was on that day in 2009 that I made a lame post saying something like “Buy my book.”
Below: posts and comments (average: about 5.2 posts per day and 50.11 comments per post). I once resolved to shut down the site if the comments ever dropped below 50 per post, but I don’t think I’ll stick to that. I calculate that, if traffic stays about the same, we should hit one million comments in about five months, and maybe there will be a big contest for that millionth comment.
There are over 1300 draft posts, most of which will never see the light although I intended to put them up. Road to hell and all. . .
More subscribers than I ever dreamed of! (BTW, it’s not a “blog”!)
Other matters: I’ll be gone for three weeks starting on the fourth day of Coynezaa, and will be celebrating its culmination, my birthday, in Hawaii. If you have wildlife pictures to send, please hold onto them until January 20. There’s lots to see in Hawaii (I’ll be on Oahu), and tons of good food, so expect some travel + nom posts.
Trips in the offing for 2019: Belgium, perhaps England, and ANTARCTICA! There will be other destinations not yet decided.

Oahu! That sounds terrific. I was in Maui just this past summer.
You will have a good time on Oahu, particularly if you have a guide. My time there was 1983-88. Lots of things change but some things still the same. We stayed temporarily at the Ilikai going in and coming out and lived in Kaneohe. The place is built for tourism so places to eat will be more than you can count. Traffic is really bad so you do not measure anything in miles usually, just time. The best beach on Oahu is Bellows but you probably cannot get in there. Check with your guide.
Professor Ceiling Cat, I’m curious if you’ve seen any dip in your daily stats since being banned in Pakistan. Does WordPress provide statistics detailed enough to figure that out?
No perceptible dip in views. But views have gone down since people started reading the site on their phone, so I don’t really know how many people are looking.

The US, Canada, and other anglophone countries have always been the biggest source of views, so Pakistan wouldn’t affect things much.
I’m wondering if birthday dinners in Hawaii invariably involve Spam or not.
That could be especially if you are local. Breakfast any day could be rice and fried spam.
I will have Spam sushi, but not on my birthday, when I get a special dinner that I always had when I was a kid.

I enjoy and benefit from your site, so please do not stick to your resolution about the 50+ comments per day. Or we may need to recruit a few of those trolls who automatically raise the comment number, at the expense of a slight relaxation of Da Roolz :-).

Happy birthday and holidays, Professor. Your site is probably more popular than your data suggest. A better metric would be how many read your posts, which I often do, but sometimes just in the email, so you don’t get that hit. And sometimes I’m inclined to comment but see that there is already a long list, which I’d have to read through to see if someone hasn’t already said the same thing, and it’s unlikely anybody will read mine, so I don’t bother.
Warning. When we attended the Polynesian Cultural Center(some shows are pretty good, but touristy), we hopped aboard a bus to get a quick look at a temple. It turned out to be a Later Day Saints tour and offer of salvation. Don’t get on that bus!
While in Honolulu, you can see a street named after you (kinda). Coyne Street is a small offshoot of University Avenue, “mauka” (!) of King Street and across from the Greek Corner (former landmarks Varsity Theatre, Bubbies’ Ice Cream, Moose McGillicuddy’s and Mamma Mia Pizza, are now, sadly, all gone). Re: Comment #7 above, Hawaii McDonald’s sell the “Local Breakfast Platter” – scrambled eggs with rice and choice of Spam or Portuguese sausage. I usually get the Deluxe Platter which has double the eggs/rice and both Spam and “Portagee” sausage! Happy Birthday in advance and wishing you safe travels.
