Elephant helps baby in mud pit stand up

August 24, 2018 • 2:30 pm

I find this video mesmerizing. A young elephant isn’t coordinated enough to stand up in a slippery mud pit. Another one (is it the mom?) comes over and acts as a buttress, allowing the little one to get purchase and right itself. What a smart adult!

Happy Friday!

  1. Nothing like a good roll in the mud. Hogs also go for a good mud bath on a hot day.

  2. It wasn’t clear to me what her goal was. She seemed to be helping initially, but then seemed to wallow for a minute after junior had moved away. Was she perhaps just taking a wallow and happened to maneuver into a position that helped? But, then, perhaps she was determined to help, but then decided that while she was down, she might as well get in a few slip-slides herself.

  3. Elephants are amazing creatures. Among my favorite animals. I can’t help but marvel at their bodies. How do their knees hold up under all that weight? Look at how much work those knees are doing in this clip!
