It’s International Cat Day!

Yes, August 8 is International Cat Day, except in parts of Europe and Russia, where it’s celebrated in March and February, respectively. You can see a bunch of cat-related tweets at the two hashtag sites, #internationalcatday and #InternationalCatDay on Twitter. The BBC has a short announcement with a video and a poll, and the cats are cleaning up at the poll (click on screenshot):

  2. Cats are delightful. Near my region, a serial cat murderer is on the loose. I think they have a fund to raise for a reward, if anyone is inclined to google it. They’ve told people to keep all pets inside if possible, as I think the count is up to nine. Terrible stuff. Luckily, my cats are indoor cats.

    1. Two years ago that happened in my neighborhood, my can The Gef was killed and Beast was wounded. I set up posters warning everyone for several blocks.

      The cops were useless, never even returned my call. Bastard prolly graduated to serial killer of people by now.

      1. Oh, I’m sorry for your loss. I don’t understand it at all. This one has picked up more attention because of how the person is going about it. Catnapping them at night, taking them elsewhere and then leaving them displayed where the public can find them. I’m hesitant to post the details of what he/they does/do, but it is grisly and cruel.

    2. There were stories in London of a cat killer who was cutting off their heads – it seems however that it is almost certainly foxes, who are not very strong-jawed & so often chew at extremities like heads/tails.

  3. In honor of the day we got Bumper to the vet yesterday for all shots and teeth cleaning. That was an all day event. The other cat had the same about a month ago. Pretty costly but something that must be done.

    1. My birthday is International Humanist Day, which I think is pretty cool, but International Cat Day is better!

    Maybe I’m missing something but surely the point of having an international day for something is so that everyone can celebrate it at the same time?

    If we can’t agree on when to celebrate cats how can we hope to tackle climate change? Honestly, trying to get countries to coordinate their activities is like herding something notorious for being difficult to herd.

    1. There are only two countries in the world that aren’t that aren’t signed up to the Paris Accord on Climate Change – Venezuela, because they don’t think it’s tough enough, and the US, because Trump pulled the US out. So, we’re doing better on climate change!

      1. I wonder if the Rethuglicans have even noticed what’s happening in California?

        If the fires are going to happen, better in the US than anywhere else, I suppose. If it were only possible to magically ensure that only Republicans got scorched, that would be even better. I wonder how much it will take for them to pull their heads out of the sand?

I’m thinking of creating a few fake quatrains by Nostradamus plus pointing out to the Evangelicals how unhappy God must be at them for electing Trump given all the natural disasters He’s created since the election. Fire, floods, hurricanes, red tides etc. It’s time they took notice of the “signs.”

    2. International Cat Day absolutely does not matter. If it gets celebrated, or if it doesn’t, nothing different will happen to cats or anything else.

      So comparing that with climate change is really a non sequitur.
