Mexico defeats Germany in World Cup; our contest re-opens

June 18, 2018 • 8:00 am

If you click on the screenshot below, you’ll see a short video from FIFA showing highlights of yesterday’s game in which Mexico defeated the present World Cup champions, Germany, 1-0. A great pass and a great goal. The German papers are already analyzing the sociological meaning of their defeat.

Contest Boss George has persuaded me to re-open the closed World Cup contest, in which you were asked to guess the two teams in the final as well as the final score (see rules here; where you should also post your entry). The rules have been updated now in light of the Boss’s stipulations, although the rules about tie guesses and penalty kicks remain. NOTE: These are new modified rules:

If you pick Brazil to be in the final (win or lose),  their opponent cannot be Germany, Portugal or Spain.

If you pick Germany to be in the final (win or lose), their opponent cannot be Brazil, Portugal or Spain.

That will help cut down the duplicates.  There is room for people to pick Argentina.

George adds: “I would like to see people pick Mexico.  Two entries have El Tri losing in the final. I think Denmark and Croatia deserve some love.” But of course the winner will be decided simply on the final game and its score, not on George’s preferences.

I will extend the deadline until Wednesday, June 20, at 3 pm Chicago time. Please put your entries on this thread.

Good luck!

      1. Wait, so are we all making new choices now? Or are those of us who made choices in the first thread not allowed to make another one (those ones still stand)”?

        1. Yours stands – Germany 2 France 1. We are just trying to limit the number of duplicate entries.

          1. If I had another choice, I would have gone with Belgium 2 Mexico 1. That’s a good underdog game.

    1. It will be really hard to put together an entry using those teams that does not duplicate an existing entry. Right now, half the entries have either Brazil or Germany winning or losing.

      1. Thought so, I wanted Germany 2-1 Brazil and found it was taken so I settled for 1-1 snd Germany winning on penalties but later discovered somebody else had already put that.

Now that Germany have lost a match, they may well find themselves meeting Brazil before the finals.

        1. It could be Brazil-Germany in the round of 16. Unless Sweden beats Mexico, that is likely.

          1. But if Sweden beats Mexico, then it depends on the game between Sweden and Germany. Considering how the teams played I don’t think neither Germany nor Mexico needs to worry too much. Sweden won’t win either game – but then again, two draws will be enough to eliminate Germany.

  1. Germany lost a soccer match. And the German newspapers and media are starting psychological, historical and/or sociological analyzes.
I am so tired. And I am getting a headache.

  2. It was astonishing how bad Germany were at defending against breaks.

The first rule of football tactics is that if the opposition leave n men up front, you need n+1 defenders with them.

Germany repeatedly violated this rule, and if Mexico had been better they would have won by far more.

    1. You are supposed to post your entries on the original contest post. In any case – you already entered – Spain 3 Brazil 0.

  3. Yesterday, when the whole Swiss population was watching Switzerland playing Brasil I was on my balcony watching a stone marten, Martes foina, in my neighbours’ garden and then counting bat passes. If I tell this to my colleagues at work they think I am weird.
