Jesus ‘n’ Mo ‘n’ Reiki

May 30, 2018 • 8:45 am

The new Jesus and Mo strip, called “trade”, came with a message from the pair:

We’ve done Reiki before, but exorcism is in the news again [JAC: see here], and the irony of exorcists being sceptical about reiki is just too tasty to resist.

If you don’t know what Reiki is, it’s a form of “alternative healing” (aka “quackery”) based on channeling “universal energy” through the palms of the practitioner into the patient (see here). Many millions have been spent by credulous sufferers on this tomfoolery.

I’d urge you to throw a few bucks, at least, to the artist for all the amusement he/she/hir/they provide; the Patreon is here.

  1. The original Japanese Reiki was wildly mystical, but the fellow who brought it to the Western world (Chujiro Hayashi) tried to tone it down moderating some its more outlandish claims.

  2. Dunno why, but every time I see that word, in my mind’s ear I hear The Dan singing “Reiki don’t lose that number.”

      1. Now, there’s an earworm gonna stick with me the rest of the day. Thanks a lot! 🙂

    1. Do you have to eat a plate of dog poop to know you won’t like it? Well, there’s already enough evidence against Reiki to make it theoretically impossible. It may have a placebo effect, but that’s all. And here you are touting a completely ineffectual method of healing that bilks suffering people.

I suggest you go post on the woo-ish pro-Reiki websites. And hey, don’t knock homeopathy till you’ve tried it!

I’m taking bets on how long before that sentence gets quote-mined 😉

  3. Do some research before you say such desparaging things about vibrational medicine aka reiki. There is physics behind how it works and although it is VERY complicated, anyone can understand it. Additionally, scientists can now photograph the electrical image with a SQUID machone showing the energy released during reiki.. check it out. It truely is a beautiful adjunct to contemporary treatment.

    1. LOL. Another one comes out of the woodwork. Here’s the paragraph, with references, in Wikipedia:

Reiki is a pseudoscience.[1] It is based on qi (“chi”), which practitioners say is a universal life force, although there is no empirical evidence that such a life force exists.[3][4] Clinical research has not shown reiki to be effective as a treatment for any medical condition.[3] There has been no proof of the effectiveness of reiki therapy beyond the placebo effect. An overview of reiki investigations found that studies reporting positive effects had methodological flaws. The American Cancer Society stated that reiki should not replace conventional cancer treatment,[5] a sentiment echoed by Cancer Research UK[6] and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.[7]

I won’t ask you to tell us about the “physics behind it”, as I doubt you understand them yourself, and I want to avoid the ugly sight of you being dismantled by readers. Just stop pushing unscientific woo on my website.

    2. Just read Sean Carroll’s impossibility of a soul and replace “soul” with your specific brand of Universal Energy [sic]

  4. Reiki is not a bad thing just because trolls and demons are trying to get in the way of people helping other people.Reiki is from the Lord.

  5. “Shoot me now”

Gosh, PCC is living dangerously today 😎

    1. Aaargh!

That was, of course, a reply to PCC’s comment at #8. WordPress strikes again…
