We have remarkable robber flies @GorongosaPark. Species of Hyperechia mimic carpenter bees, while Microstylum resemble sphecid wasps. pic.twitter.com/PAozzQ5IfF

We’ve posted about robberflies (Asilidae) before here, with a reader’s photo here and a fabulous robberfly in amber here. Go read about them! Amazing beasts. (I note in passing that PCC(E) doesn’t have a ‘flies’ category here. For shame! So now we do.)
Fabulous photos. Love them beasties. Perhaps you could illuminate me regarding robber fly behavior. When my daughter was a toddler I had a small swimming pool for her that within days of filling would be covered with drowned robber flies, so much so that I took to covering it during daylight when not in use. Is there any known reason why these grand predators would find these wading pools so attractive?
How could Jerry not have a “Flies” category! For shame!
Great pictures! and the link sent me to Piotrs’ Tweeter-feed for much more entertainment.
Wow, he sure does not like our orange president! 🙂
I don’t do twitter, but I noticed his “anti-45” Nazi looking icon next to his name. Love it!
