Gorgeous monster robberflies

We’ve posted about robberflies (Asilidae) before here, with a reader’s photo here and a fabulous robberfly in amber here. Go read about them! Amazing beasts. (I note in passing that PCC(E) doesn’t have a ‘flies’ category here. For shame! So now we do.)

  1. Fabulous photos. Love them beasties. Perhaps you could illuminate me regarding robber fly behavior. When my daughter was a toddler I had a small swimming pool for her that within days of filling would be covered with drowned robber flies, so much so that I took to covering it during daylight when not in use. Is there any known reason why these grand predators would find these wading pools so attractive?
