If I could curse on this website, I’d spout a streak of blue language. I’ve lived through a lot of conservative Presidents, but never one as thoroughly odious as Donald Trump. What the #$((&*^% just did is, according to CNN and multiple sources, decide to draw the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate accord Thursday, a major step that fulfills a campaign promise while seriously dampening global efforts to curb global warming.
The decision amounts to a rebuttal of the worldwide effort to pressure Trump to remain a part of the agreement, which 195 nations signed onto. Foreign leaders, business executives and Trump’s own daughter lobbied heavily for him to remain a part of the deal, but ultimately lost out to conservatives who claim the plan is bad for the United States.“In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord but being negotiations to reenter either the Paris accord or an entirely new transaction under terms that are fair to the United States,” Trump said from the White House Rose Garden.
“We’re getting out. And we will start to renegotiate and we’ll see if there’s a better deal. If we can, great. If we can’t, that’s fine,” he added.
But he will stick to the withdrawal process laid out in the Paris agreement, which President Barack Obama joined and most of the world has already ratified. That could take nearly four years to complete, meaning a final decision would be up to the American voters in the next presidential election.
Still, Mr. Trump’s decision is a remarkable rebuke to fellow heads-of-state, climate activists, corporate executives and members of the president’s own staff, all of whom failed this week to change Mr. Trump’s mind with an intense, last-minute lobbying blitz.
It makes good on a campaign promise to “cancel” an agreement he repeatedly mocked and derided at rallies, saying it would kill American jobs. As president, he has moved rapidly to reverse Obama-era policies designed to allow the United States to meet its pollution-reduction targets as set under the agreement.
He just said, “protect our companies.”
And he doesn’t get that the location of the meeting that drew up the agreement is not the beneficiary of such agreement. The guy is an ignoramus, speaking to ignoramuses.
America is no longer strong enough to survive Trump without significant damage to us. Trump says that the world is laughing at us because of our handling of international agreements. The world is laughing at us because Trump is our president.
Would any non-citizen getting a US Ph.D. want to stay in the country for a post doc and an eventual job here? I doubt it.
The world isn’t laughing at you. The world pretty much shares your horror. Whatever policies that American states decide to follow regarding climate change will affect the rest of the world in a very sizeable way.

As someone whose girlfriend heads a lab that gets many non-US-citizen postdocs, I can assure you that many want to stay and work here permanently. Indeed the ones who are really good all want to stay here. As bad as things have gotten here, the US is still one of the best (or least bad) countries to be a scientist.
Actually, come to think of it, she’s had a couple of good German postdocs who decided to pursue careers in select European countries. But, at least for now, the US is still an extremely attractive country for young scientists to start their careers.

It makes absolutely no difference — what was agreed on in Paris was to continue business as usual.
The only difference is that prior to Trump the US was paying lip service to the issue, now it’s in open denial.
But words alone do not make much of a difference in terms of how much GHGs are emitted.
It will make the goals much harder. Russia has already indicated it isn’t particularly committed now. The more countries pull out or follow in word only the more others will be tempted to do the same or pull out entirely

Well, the other perspective on this is that Trump is saying openly what Obama was doing in secret.
Anyone who actually understands the climate situation will tell you that the Paris agreement is essentially meaningless as it falls far short of what actually has to be done to save civilization.
The difference between Trump and Obama is minuscule compared to the distance between either of the two and a realistic position on the issue.
Unfortunately, the issue has become so politicized that even many of the climate scientists themselves are betraying science by playing political games and lying by omission.

That is, the best we were planning to do is slow down the loss of our coastal cities and agricultural centers.
Agreed. As bad as outright denial is, the fact remains that the vast majority of climate change policy is, and for decades has been, laughably underwhelming. If anything, the rate of emissions has actually gotten worse since any kind of collective talks even started. The oft-quoted “two degrees” target is now more a matter of political expediency than a matter of scientific feasibility; we’re well on our way towards the four-degree danger zone by the end of the century.
It’s not even that hard to figure out why. Most major governments in developed nations basically serve big businesses and have done so since the crises of the 70s and 80s. And, since the biggest businesses are in the fossil fuel industry, you bet your bottom dollar there’s been virtually no progress since then.
Trump simply reflects a strain of climate change (and science) denial that’s been festering outside scientific circles for years, even decades, especially but not exclusively among the politically far-right. It’s just that, unlike most of the rest of the developed world, he’s less subtle about it.
But make no mistake: in the context of heel-dragging, uninterested, and even outright hostile and subversive attitudes towards the issue among the public and the politicians, this turn of events is barely a surprise.

The US has reduced carbon enissions from its maximum in 2007 with about 14 percent.

How exactly does infrared radiation distinguish between CO2/CH4/etc. molecules that were released in the US vs other such molecules generated elsewhere?
US emissions have decreased because of deindustrailization and because of decreased living standards in the US (meaning less commuting and travelling). Deindustrailization means that the stuff that was produced in the US now is produced elsewhere (and the geographic origin of emissions got shifted accordingly). And the oil that is not used in the US is now used in China and India.
This is how US emissions decreased.
Spend at least a minute thinking about what that means before you post nonsense like this.

Do you have any more recent data? The graph stops in 2009 in the depth of the great recession. I would expect us consumption to decline during an economic downturn so it seems a bit misleading. What’s important is if the economy recovered without a corresponding increase in carbon emissions.
It’s deeper than that though.
The fossil fuel companies probably understand the situation better than the politicians — they understand things likes Peak Oil, it’s their business after all, and they also understand climate change better than, for example, your typical banker, because banks deal with phantom electronic wealth while the fossil fuel business is fundamentally rooted in the earth and planetary sciences.
The more general problems are the following:
1. Most of the people running the world have no scientific background and as a result they live in a fantasy world disconnected from reality in which the world is understood to be political in nature, economics is king and money is thought to be actual wealth. It is no wonder they do not perceive the situation to be as dire as it is — to them it is just another political negotiation to be made. So the scientists are telling us we need to cut emissions by such and such amount by such and such year? We’ll negotiate, and meet halfway (or more like a tenth of the way). That nature does not negotiate is incomprehensible to them because their worldview is not that of someone in the physical sciences.
2. The socioeconomic structure of the world is such that it cannot be maintained except in conditions of perpetual growth. Now perpetual growth in a finite system is a physical impossibility, but as I said, most of the people running the show are too scientifically illiterate to understand even that so perpetual growth is what is being pursued at all costs. And even if they did understand, is it really possible to do something about it? Who is going to implement a global government, a global reduction in per capita material consumption, and a global reduction of population? The people would be against it, and nobody has the kind of power necessary to enforce these things. Also, if you publicly tell people that the civilization is doomed over the next century because of the combination of resource depletion and environmental degradation, they will probably panic and that might cause the whole thing to collapse very quickly…

It will take days to deconstruct all the lies, half-truths and outright misrepresentations in Trump’s remarks. Clearly, the speech was written for him because there’s no way he could write a full sentence. He read it well, though, even with all the “believe me” ad libs.
However, it was very general with no real specifics. I had to laugh out loud when he announced the opening of a coal mine as if that would affect the economy one jot. He really is a simple-minded old fool.
Pruitt, however, is the dangerous one. He’s smart enough to know better but greedy enough not to care. So what if he throws the entire country under the bus so long as he makes a $ billion for himself.
I doubt anywhere in the Orange one’s calculation is the fact that a lot of American’s will remain a testament against him. Trump is reshaping a lost political party (republicans) and accelerated their trip backward to the 19th century. Paul Ryan has to be having wet dreams these days about how he’ll decorate the Oval Office. The instant he thinks he’s got enough political cover to start impeachment proceedings — that is, as soon as he thinks Drumpf has played out enough rope to hang himself — he’ll “regretfully” and “reluctantly” pull the trigger.

The US has always opposed any real action to stop global heating and has worked to water down any agreement it participated in. The Paris agreement was more of the same, so I don’t think there’s any real effect of leaving it. In fact, leaving the Paris agreement is a more honest position than pretending to agree but not doing anything whatsoever to implement it.
But of course Trump is doing it because he’s an ignorant fool who hates the “Department of Environmental”. This doesn’t matter, but slashing regulations that protect air and water really sickens and kills people, and pisses me off…

The question remains as to how many of Trump’s army of doltish dupes will reconsider their support in light of these developments. I suspect very few will care enough to do anything as long as Trump feeds their fantasies about the state of the country and the world . We live in a country where half the country is too apathetic and ignorant to vote. Another quarter is consumed by bitterness and has fallen to the sway of the demagogue. The other quarter provides rational solutions, but is leaderless. As a result the future of the planet is in jeopardy as is the Pinker thesis.

Trump has said that “climate change is a hoax perpetrated by China” and now he is saying he wants to “renegotiate the agreement”. If he thinks it’s a hoax, making climate change nonexistent, why does he want to renegotiate an agreement on something that does not exist? Surely he should just say “it’s a hoax, we’re leaving”? Nothing he does or says makes any sense (sorry to restate the obvious).
A recent story in Daily Kos says what I’ve believed for years-
that Trump had NO real belief in the birther conspiracy theories: he just expressed them to pander to a certain base.
Trump has no fixed beliefs, or even flexible ones for that matter, and certainly nothing like principles. His only interest is in whoring after fame and filthy lucre.
Birtherism was just another scam to Trump, like Trump University or the Taj in Atlantic City.
Trump had to pull out. If he didn’t, he would have pissed off the bulk of Republicans in Congress. And they are the only barrier to him being impeached.
It won’t be immediate…actually it will take years to get out of the agreement. This issue will be on the ballot in 2018.

I listened to about 1/2 of his speech yesterday. He repeated himself many, many times (who writes this shit for him? Oh yeah, an ignoramus that knows Drumpf’s ignoramus base).
I really annoyed me in an unhealthy way and reminded me of why I never listen to the lyin’, orange fool.
It is not healthful, and I have never despised my fellow country men/women (who voted for trump/pence and still fervently support him) like I unfortunately now do. The lies, ignorance, hate, anti-intellectualism, etc. are on full display. They chanted in Chicago in 1968 (Viet Nam War): “The whole world is watching.” However, this scenario is different and perhaps the “resistance” marches can provide some hope for thinking people.
To indicate how disgusted many in the country are with this guy and his decision on the Paris deal, recall in his speech today he said, he was looking out for Pittsburgh, not Paris. Soon after the major of Pittsburgh sent out a tweet, you are not looking out for us and we are for the Paris agreement.

I watched this speech and heard some reactions afterwards on CNBC (NBC’s business channel). For what it’s worth, Trump never called global warming a hoax (despite his campaign remarks). In fact, he claimed to be in favor of protecting the climate (trying to mollify his critics, I suppose).
While he mentioned coal mining, others stated that coal was dead. LNG and fracking are cheaper than mining coal.
Many talked about states and cities stepping up their efforts on behalf of the environment. Obama put out a response to Trump mentioning this same thing.
Quite a few industry leaders, including Elon Musk denounced Trump’s decision. Some of these leaders were oil company chief executives.
John Kerry had a stinging rebuttal to Trump’s decision later that evening on CBS News.
We’ll see how things go.

Here’s something I read today (in William Shirer’s 20th Century Journey, Vol. III, A Native’s Return that rings true about der Drumpfenführer today:
Written in 1950 (on returning to the USA after some months in Europe):
President Trump has guaranteed that Americas main competitors Ie. Europe Russia India and China will be at each others throats for the next few years. These four share the same huge landmass and pollution can easily spread from one to another. In Trumpthink bad blood in EurAsia means less chance of forming a challenging industrial bloc so the worse it gets the better it gets for Americas business community.
By then President Trump will be long gone probably to Alaska to avoid the pollution down South.
Alaska, where he and Sarah Pee can have a meeting of idiocies…
