This video came to me via Heather Hastie and Ann German (creator of the Impeach Pussy Grabber website and bumper stickers). That’s all I know about it, save that it’s in Chicago. I don’t even know the species of woodpecker, but I’m sure a reader will! (It must be a hairy or a dowmy.)

I’d say definitely Downy by the size. Very unusual behavior though. It must be used to being hand-fed or be somehow habituated to people.
Hairy and Downy woodpeckers have the red on the nape of the neck, not the top. This is a sapsucker. Say, while you’re marching today, you can practice a chant/tongue twister: “how much sap could a sapsucker suck if a sapsucker could suck sap?” THAT will keep you on your toes!
Gabe is correct. It’s a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius).

Very sweet. But, I always wonder, when I see animals behaving outside their normal ways, whether there is something wrong. Do birds get rabies? (Not to be a killjoy…)
I suspect it may have been dazed from colliding with a window (or something) . . . muscle memory kept it hanging on until it recovered and flew into the car.

I’m just now getting back into birding after a long absence. I challenged myself to ID this one but came up short. I was going for Hairy. I hadn’t even noticed the red was on the top of the head, not the side. Looking and seeing are two different species.
