Philomena Cunk presents a new “Moments of Wonder,” the subject being “Charity”. Reader Michael sent this, alone with a note:
This video was made for Comic Relief day last week in the UK [AKA Red Nose Day]Unfortunately Cunk’s writers have fallen for the Mother Teresa myth, but other than that a reasonable stab. I’m not sure how well this sketch travels due to the Brit references throughout – the best one being @ 2:11 – red noses in the Groucho Club toilets [the club is a hangout for cocaine-sniffing rock stars, media ‘luvvies’ & C list celebs]
The best part is her interview with “Charity Man”:
Well, I just lost a significant amount of respect for Ms. Cunk. She’s perfectly willing to pretend that Mother Theresa was a charitable, saintly icon who helped millions. Of course, we know she really caused millions to suffer, and did it all in the name of Christ.
I remember somewhere around the very early 90’s, my parents decided to watch Comedy Relief for the first time and let me watch with them….
…that is, until, they found out just how insanely dirty many of the comics were. It was after a particularly icky (but, as I remember, also hilarious) bit that they said, “Sorry, you have to leave the room. You’re not allowed to watch this until you’re older.”
Cunk is a comedian who plays an investigative reporter (of sorts), not an investigative reporter with a flair for comedy. Better investigators than her have been fooled by Anjezë Bojaxhiu.
I know, but that doesn’t mean she’s either (a) not involved in the writing process, and/or (b) can’t demand that something be changed or she won’t participate. I would want her to refuse to participate in the promulgation of a pernicious myth.
I don’t know about this episode but previous Cunks have been co-written by Charlie Brooker who rarely puts a foot wrong in biting satire and being on the right side of an issue (IMO). I note that the scene has images of Lenny Henry, Graham Norton and Dawn French being described as bastards and Mother Teresa being contrasted as being a paragon of virtue. Neither of these descriptions is accurate and it would not surprise me if this was a deliberate nod to those of us who are aware of her (MT’s) deficiencies. Philomena rarely completes a po-faced sentence without there being a subtext and it would be out of character for her to be so straight-forward as to hold up someone as being good without subtly mocking them.
Interesting perspective. I hope you’re right.
She’s playing a role.
I know. Read my response to gravel inspector.
I struggled to understand because of her accent. But I managed.
She’s from the nearest Town to where I live, Bolton, and they aren’t particularly “broad”, there are a lot more unintelligible Dialects around and about.lol
I’ve been enjoying season 3 of “Grace and Frankie” but in one of the episodes there was a lot of blather about religion with a character who’s a gay former priest who brought up the Mother Theresa myth. Kind of ruined it for me.
While Jerry is away converting the Un-CeilingCatly of the antipodes to the One True (but meandering) Path, is there any chance of an open thread. I’ve had a quite nice paper drop my way with some interesting thoughts on that unending fount of evolutionarily excellent evidence, the Eye.
And what does it say ?
Interesting things.
The intermittent “open thread” idea seems an appropriate place for it, since PCC is on an email-restricted diet (to make room for the lamb muscles and mussel other-bits).
It’s online at http://www.pnas.org/content/114/12/E2375.full.pdf?with-ds=yes ;
Short version is that the authors contend that the increase in visual range that proto-terrestrial vertebrates could have been a driver in both limb evolution and neural capabilities. A crocodile-like niche could have “pre-adapted” lineages for coming out of the water and facing the challenges of the land.
I feel I’m missing quite a bit of the humor because I don’t know the people mentioned. Still, it’s solid Cunk humor.
Admirable legs but too much eye make-up.
“Admirable legs” -You can’t say that! That is, unless you are a Daily Mail writer…
Neither writer nor reader.
I visited the Groucho club once as the guest of a member and was a bit disappointed, it was nowhere near as louche as I expected. Perhaps I didn’t get into the places reserved for members. I’m fascinated to speculate as to whether you would have classified my hostess as a ‘media luvvie’ or ‘C-list celebrity’.
I don’t know. “20th century pin-up” and particularly: “Give until it hurts, the sexiest thing a nun may have said” does not sound like having fallen for the Mother Theresa myth. Not with MT’s prediliction for suffering (of others).
