This (from a tw**t by John Horstman) isn’t very hard at all, but it does show the crypsis that never gets old to me:

It took a minute, but there they are in all their glory (It’s as if they didn’t want to be seen). Amazing.
Those look like some very flat caterpillars.
Flaterpillars?
Reminds me of the Lappet moth caterpillars, but I am not sure what these are.
Will they be eaten by that large gecko creeping up on them?
😀

Impressive. I saw them before I enlarged the picture, but then thought, “No, those aren’t caterpillars.” Wrong.
My sense of scale was completely off. I spotted 3 “caterpillars”, each one the size of an actual caterpillar leg before the real ones jumped out at me. Very weird.
Me too.
Pedantic quibble: those aren’t legs; they’re prolegs. The actual legs are much closer to the head and are less visible, and less likely to be mistaken for caterpillars.
Thanks for the correction.
So there are many more caterpillars in the world than I was aware of. I only spot the obvious ones.
What species are they?
