Somehow it’s particularly ironic that a jihadist discusses his faith with The Atheist Pig. But the pig is right on the money, far more insightful than many atheist ragebloggers:

A report in the news today says Arab youth are less enamored with ISIS lately – “even if they were to turn away from violence.” No thanks to the authoritarian left.

Bullseye!!
After 9/11, I anticipated that there would be a backlash by many in this country against any and all Muslims or anyone even perceived as Muslim, e.g., Sikhs. And sure enough, it didn’t take long before innocent people were targeted, attacked, and denied their 1st Amendment rights. It is, imo, an inclination by many, if not most, liberals to take the side of those who are seen as being persecuted. While it can be taken too far, it is a laudable inclination.
I cannot speak for all liberals, but that is my motivation for not constantly harping on Islam. In short, passions are inflamed enough without my voice. I have no concerns about it being an issue of “racism.” I also see easily how it can be counterproductive to constantly use the term “Islamic extremist” as it invites all those who consider themselves “Islamic” to identify with the “extremists” — something we’d all, I think, like to avoid.
Further, I would like someone who ascribes to the notion that we must say the words “Islamic extremist” in order to defeat Islamic extremism (a contention I hear a lot) to explain the mechanism by which saying, or not, those words affects the effort to defeat ISIS, et al. I don’t think Osama Bin Ladin would be any deader if Obama had been hollering “Islamic extremist!” at the time.
The truth is the first casualty of war.
Has Obama ever used the phrase “Islamic extremist”
Actually there were remarkably few attacks on Muslims, the few there were had a lot of publicity. Attacks on Jews are double the attacks on Muslims in the US.
It’s not saying Islamic extremists that I want, but Islamist extremists. There needs to be an understanding of what Islamism is, as opposed to Islam. The two need to be separated so ignorant calls to ban all Muslims don’t gain traction. Islamism is an extremist ideology, also called Salafism and Wahabbism, within Islam. Because in the US the difference has never been made clear, there are a lot of people who blame all Muslims when it’s the Islamists who are the problem.
They don’t blame all Christians when there is a Christian terrorist attack because they have no problem understanding some are moderate and some are extremists. Same with animal rights activists.
As a leader Obama sets the narrative, and in this case he’s failed to do it.
One of the things needed to defeat Islamist terrorists is support from governments in the Middle East, which are all Muslim. They have no problem with the term Islamist, and indeed use it themselves. They are naturally upset when the only qualifier used is Muslim or Islamic as it associates the mainstream with the extremists. (You could argue that that association is perfectly valid of course, but it wouldn’t be helpful in diplomatic situations.)
I understand where you’re coming from in saying that not all Muslims are Islamists. But I can’t see that there is a significant difference between “Islamist extremist” and “Islamic extremist”. Given the “extremist” nature, this seems like a distinction without a difference. “Islamist” vs. “Muslim” I will agree to.
yeah this isn’t what “Islamism” is. Islamism is simply believing Islam should be incorporated into a political system, instead of liberal ideas of “freedom” and democracy. Shias and Sunnis can be Islamists, in fact a lot of Salafi/Wahhabis are apolitical. Islamism itself is misunderstood because it’s a broad spectrum, but even the harshest “Islamists” are more merciful when it comes to noncombatants than the US Imperialist mission.
+1 Thanks for saying this so well.
I’m very disturbed seeing the OP’s comment lauded. Can any of you actually validate this pervasive Islamic victimhood narrative with evidence. By the time you posted, jay had already pointed out that violent Islamophobia is rare and much rarer per capita than with Jews. I guess I would like to see someone tackle that sort of challenge rather than just applauding a comment that is really just amounts to self-congratulations.

I’m sorry to say your post is precisely the sort of rationalization the cartoon is criticizing.
Even more disturbingly, you manufacture a victimhood narrative that is unsupported by actual crime statistics. I keep waiting for someone with your viewpoint to finally provide how many murders, maimings, and sexual assaults have been attributed to this dread scourage of Islamophobia that is so grave according to your narrative, that it validates turning a blind eye to the dozens killed in terrorism and honor violence.

That’s GROSS and RACIST to say beheading you is a problem! That’s just your white western privilege talking!

In my comments below, rather than feeling the need to explain myself. Might borrow those tags in the future. :p
Yeah, I kind of like Afflecktation. Maybe we can get it added to the dictionary if it gets some circulation. Then we can get some HTML Afflecktation tags approved in the next standard and avoid all future confusion.
Pig’s last comment reminded me of this:

Sheesh, liberal guilt.
Somehow this reminds me of Mario Bunge’s only contribution to existentialism, the entry “Dasein” in his _Dictionary of Philosophy_, which reminds us of its cognate words, like “daschwein” (pig-there).
I love it. Of course we white imperialists oppressors deserve beheading, or at least we sympathize with their sentiments. 😛
Just in case there’s anyone who misunderstands my previous comment despite the :P, I was playing the role of self hating left wing regressive who think the religion of Islam doesn’t play any significant part in motivating jihadists.
And played beautifully. I almost fell for it. Oscar performance.
