Thursday: Hili dialogue (and squirrel lagniappe)

January 14, 2016 • 6:00 am

Happy Thursday to all: one more day before normal people get the weekend off! It is one month until Valentine’s Day, so start thinking about what to buy your sweetheart (and remember, males like candy and presents, too!). On this day in 1967, the the first “Be-In” occurred in San Francisco, initiating the famed “Summer of Love.” I was part of that generation, though not that event, and I have to smile when I think of how we all were so determined to change the world. Well, the world is still pretty much as it is, but I think the young people can at least take some credit for ending the Vietnam War. On this day in 1872, the terrier Greyfriar’s Bobby died in Edinburgh after supposedly spending 14 years guarding his owner’s grave. He’s the Scottish equivalent of Hachiko, though Bobby’s story may be apocryphal.  (I did go to the cemetery to see Bobby’s monument, though.) Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is given a lesson in biology:

Hili: Which animals sleep through the winter?
A: Other animals. We have to survive it somehow.

In Polish:
Hili: Które zwierzęta przesypiają zimę?
Ja: Inne, my musimy to jakoś przetrwać.

Lagnaippe: Here from imgur, and tw**ted by Andrew Middleton, is a map of every squirrel-induced power outage in the U.S. last year. There was a lot of rodential damage!

  1. There was a lot of rodential damage!

So, either the squirlz of (the rectangular one on the middle) Wyoming (?) have taken their electrical safety courses, or they don’t exist, or the electrical supply companies haven’t thought of the squirlz excuse?
Why so cynical? We have rail companies that, in the last few years have escaped punitive damages for late trains on the grounds of (1) the wrong type of leaves on the line, (2) the wrong type of snow on the line, (3) the wrong amount of water on the line, and (4) a few days ago, the wrong type of sunshine in the signal boxes.
Anyone want to take a bet on when we have trains delayed by the wrong type of squirlz on the line?

      1. Where the hell’s Alaska? 😉 Also, this is the first time I’ve ever seen Puerto Rico included on a US map.

I suspect you’d also find a fairly close tracking between places that have the most tree cover and squirrels. Squirrels tend to like trees, and those plains are pretty forest-challenged.

(BTW, for anyone interested, Harney County is the second one to the west of the SE corner of Oregon.)

  2. A squirrel knocked out power to my school for an entire day a couple years ago. As expected, neither students nor faculty complained much, although it might have caused havoc with a few lab experiments.

  3. Once again, Hili is stretched out on Cyrus’s bed, while Cyrus is relegated to a corner! 🙂
