Professor Ceiling Cat (Emeritus) is poorly with a sore throat today, and so will soon go home to work from the supine position. Posting will in all likelihood be very light, but I’ll do my best. On this day in history, Henry VIII was excommunicated by the Pope (1538); having lost his father figure, he proceeded to execute his wives. And WTF is this from Wikipedia???: on his day in 1862, “American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant issues General Order No. 11, expelling Jews from parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky”. I had no idea! Why the Jews? On December 17, 1997, “the British Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 took effect, banning all handguns with the exception of antique and show weapons.” Enacted by the Blair government in response to the Dunblane school massacre the year before in Scotland, it’s exactly what the US should be doing now. If the UK can do it, why not America? Finally, on this date in 2011, Supreme (not Dear) leader Kim Jong-Il was assumed bodily to heaven to join his father, President for Eternity Kim Il-Sung. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is upset because her very favorite tidbit, ham, has gone down Andrzej’s gullet. Look at her expression!
Hili: What happened to the smoked ham?
A: I ate it.
Hili: Co się stało z tą wędzoną szynką?
Ja: Zjadłem.

Two short questions: Is smoked ham good for cats? Is any smoked foodstuff good for cats and dogs?
I have no idea whether smoked ham (or any smoked meat) is good for the health of cats and dogs. Undoubtedly though it is very good for the level of their happiness. I haven’t met any cat or dog which was not deliriously happy after getting a piece of smoked ham or sausage.

Smoked food is not good for humans! eg

…I still love smoked bacon though – now & then! 😉
If Hili likes smoked meat…get her a bag of this stuff:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AY8VV0
It’s a Japanese staple and is one of three ingredients (the other two being water and seaweed) used to make the broth base for miso soup. Baihu is seriously addicted to the stuff!
Cheers,

Thanks!
Lovely story about the Kitten, very lucky,as for Her Highness, she doesn;t seem to know on which side her Bread is Buttered.
Now I have another story to play “the money game” with. I used to say “here he is before the Civil War… and after. Before… after…” etc.
Now, especially if it is a tender snowflake millenial type, I can say: “this is President Jew-lysses Sectarian Grant!!” Then in a Southern drawl: “Befaw he kicked the Hebes outta Tenn-a-saay… and afta! Befaw… afta…” etc. until they go crying to mommy or start yelling epithets at me.
Do take care of yourself, PCC! Kick that sore throat sumpthin’ good. Time for something with honey in it. 🙂
Interesting bit about Grant’s General Order No. 11. It was intended to disrupt the Confederacy’s cotton economy and represented anti-semitic stereotyping of Jews as unscrupulous businessmen. Lincoln revoked the order a month later.
They didn’t call him Abraham for nuthin!
Another possibly interesting bit about the Grant thing: my wife’s grandmother married a Robert Simpson, who was a descendent of Ulysses S. Grant. (The “S” stands for “Simpson”.) Her maiden name was Lowenstein… and so my two kids are both part Jewish, and descendants of Grant. Someone other than Ulysses got the last laugh here…
I am sure Hili is excited to be celebrating the 245th Anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s baptism. No exact record of his birth date exists. Great Google doodle in his honor today. An even better treat, the full Ninth Symphony by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Riccardo Muti. An official authorized version by the CSO with great video and audio.
You can view it here.
Thanks. It goes well with boiled eggs and toast for breakfast.
We are on a roll: sore throat, moar goat and poor tot.
Meanwhile, take care, Jerry!
We see that look in our house when we eat the last of the ham.
Hope you feel better soon! I thought I detected a bit of sore throat today too but it seems to have cured itself for now. I came in late because I had a migraine the day before that sapped me of energy! It seems many were poorly at work because of the weather.
