Saturday: Hili dialogue

December 12, 2015 • 4:59 am

It’s Saturday, the sparsest day for readership at this site: is it even worth me posting? It’s going to rain today, even with a high of 59°F (15°C)—a spectacularly warm day for mid-December. But the rain will continue on and off till Wednesday. On this day in 1901, Marconi received the first radio signal transmitted across the Atlantic, Delhi (my favorite Indian city) replaced Calcutta as the nation’s capital in 1911, and, in 1963, Kenya became independent from the United Kingdom. On this day in 1915, Frank Sinatra was born (he died at 83) and Dionne Warwick was born in 1940, making her 75 today. Wikipedia also declares that an orca, Keiko, who played Willy in the movie “Free Willy” died on this day of pneumonia in 2003 at the young age of 27. That’s the first time I’ve seen an animal celebrated on a Wikipedia days-of-the-year site. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is only three years old, with many years left to converse with Andrzej—and amuse his staff:

Hili: Do you want me on the pillow or under the pillow?
A: Maybe it’s better on the pillow.

In Polish:
Hili: Czy chcesz, żebym była na poduszce, czy pod poduszką?
Ja: Może jednak na poduszce.

  1. I read you on a Saturday! Please don’t stop. I don’t have much time the rest of the week. Who are these people who have jobs where they can scan the internet at work?

  2. 70F here in Texas and oppressively humid. Might be thunderstorms later today, so I’ll do my horse chores and feed Barn Cat this morning.

Re: the Marconi anniversary, I just finished reading Erik Larson’s Thunderstruck, which ties together the history of Marconi’s work and a gruesome tale of murder. It’s an interesting read, but I liked Isaac’s Storm much better.

  3. It’s not the quantity of viewers, it’s the quality. Besides, as Hili knows, for the retired and the unemployed there are no weekends or holidays.

  4. Your Saturday is my Sunday, so my Saturday is fine as it’s your Friday… so I’m good for my Sat WEIT & coffee. 😉

  5. Hili exhibits trust, when under a pillow, to know that no one will sit on it. This makes a pet endearing. When we trim their claws, they trust as well. Usually.

    1. If I were Hili, I’d want to be under there to jump out at people and surprise them. Again, I’m surprised I’m not actually a cat. Maybe I am & this is the source of all my problems!

  6. I read on some Saturdays too. Sometimes I save up several days posts and read them all at once in a binge. Hili reminds me of my Thomas who knows the value of a cozy warm cocoon spot under the blanket.

  7. If you were to take a Saturday break from posting, I would understand, although I hope you don’t consider Hili Dialogue a mere “post.” A day without Hili is inconceivable.

  8. Re:Delhi, I heard on BBC radio this morning that the air pollution in the city is worse by far than in China. Rich people fit air filters to their houses but for most they have to breathe foul air.

  9. cutie pie face! and, keep posting on Saturdays . . . my kitteh sits and waits for me to click on the Hili dialogue . . . then we have OUR dialogue!

  10. I can see how Saturday is a lower readership day, but that’s what Sundays are for. Much better than wasting precious time at church. Keep posting PCCE!

  11. I read WEIT every day.I work when I am at work despite sitting at a computer all day. WEIT is for winding down after work and for relaxing on the weekend. Thank you for a great website and all of your effort.

  12. Yes, Hili, ON the pillow is definitely better and *safer*. This afternoon, I accidentally sat down on my kitteh! Yikes! I didn’t see her there in the shadows. Luckily, she wasn’t injured.

  13. It seems that reading WEIT is a circadian behavior for some. I, for one, quite enjoy WEIT and have a difficult time not being captivated any time a WEIT email arrives in my Inbox. I see them and look almost instantly, if I possibly can, no matter what day of the week. I’ve had to try to trick myself by unsubscribing, as I know they’ll be there waiting for me to read if I just come to WEIT. But then I feel lonesome without them landing in my Inbox and resubscribe. I have to try not looking on days when I must permit my attention to be on work in the mornings.

I suspect WEIT gives many of us a dose of daily pleasure.

      1. Yeah, there’s that, too 🙂

I can’t decide whether I’m an introvert or an extrovert, as being with most humans exhausts me, but interacting online is fun. It feels fantastic to pen messages on here and to get them. Composition is enjoyable regardless, but the social part makes it more so.

        1. I’m much the same way. Since I’ve been out of the daily grind type of employment I don’t have a schedule and as a result I don’t interact with people often. So, yes, engaging here on WEIT is a chance to quietly socialize.

  14. I read you on Saturday (plus every other day of the week). Always enjoy Hili and Caturday Felids.

On ten Saturdays of the year, during The Metropolitan Opera season, I go to my local movie theater and watch the Met HD telecasts. Other Saturdays (beginning in Dec) I usually catch the radio broadcasts.

I think Merilee catches some of the telecasts and Ben listens to the radio bdcsts. Are there any other opera lovers out there or are we the lonely three?

Today, I saw a fantastic replay of the 2006 special version of The Magic Flute. The puppetry was superb along with the other visual effects.

Jerry, the question is, if any of us out here might wish to discuss opera on your web site occasionally, is this out of line on our parts? After all, it is your site and a lot of other readers might consider opera boring and irrelevant. I suppose I should have emailed you in advance? Just a thought. With or without opera, I enjoy the site every night.
