Friday: Hili dialogue (and Leon lagniappe)

December 11, 2015 • 5:04 am

It’s Friday, and the weather in Chicago is still unseasonably warm, with a predicted high of 55°F (13°C) today.  My brain is still on the fritz (it’s not yet 5 a.m.), so I predict a dearth of substantial and thoughtful writing today by yours truly. Perhaps I’ll resort to clickbait! On this day in 1936, Edward VIII abdicated the throne of England for love, a choice that I would have made, too—but not for Wallis Simpson, who by all accounts was an unpleasant person. It was, of course, the Church of England that forced this decision. And, on this day in 1964, the great Sam Cooke, writer and singer of perhaps the greatest soul song of all time) died at age 33, shot to death by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is fishing for compliments (and perhaps noms):

Hili: What’s in the navel of the world?
A: A cat.
Hili: That’s right, but which one?

P1030679 (1)

In Polish:
Hili: Co jest w pępku świata?
Ja: Kot.
Hili: To by się zgadzało, ale który?
********

And Mr. Leon is back with us. Is he a budding entomologist?

Leon: A fly?!!!

  1. What a great Singer Sam Cook was, love it, as for the Nazi Sympathiser Edward Windsor he and Wallace Simpson fully deserved each other.

  2. Something is about to go flying. Actually, several somethings – firstly Leon, then the several somethings that he chooses to use as a landing zone.
Intrigued enough to follow up on the comments about Sam Cooke. Hmmm ,a significant degree of murkiness there.

  3. Apparentlty Wallace Simpson did *not* want to marry Edward, but he manipulated her into it by threatening suicide should she leave him.

Historians have speculated that he really didn’t want to be King, and that this marriage gave him the perfect excuse to walk away.

Edward was at heart a party boy.

  4. Good to start out the day with some real music.
    And yet another shooting.

Maybe the British felt the same about Wallace Simpson as George Washington, although they don’t belong in the same sentence. She was not good enough for Eddie and George was not good enough for the British army.

    1. Careful knocking the great Gen’l G Washington. He did after all manage to start a whole war on his own and years later to somehow grab the honours that should have gone to Gen’l Rochambeau and his professional french army (who really won the american rebellion).

  5. “What’s in the navel of the world?”
Boldly fishing for compliments! Like that crow using bread yesterday.

  6. Why the British government was glad the King abdicated.
They exiled The Teutonic Twit Who Quit to the Bahamas for the remainder of the War.

    1. Sorry, wordpress does not like links.
I was linking to the picture of a fawning Edward and Mrs. Simpson with a smiling Hitler, complete with swastica armband.

  7. I recognise the look on Leon’s face, it is the same look Summer-the-stripey-cat gets when she sees one of those flies that only cats can see.

  8. Abdicating the throne for love…

I think about this or whatever the equivalent would be. I’m at a time in my life where I’m looking for postdocs, but I am also looking for a mate. I’m fairly certain mate would trump job if there two came into conflict for me.

    1. Have you tried an online service? My daughter did that and very quickly found a guy she’s totally happy with. They both like the same things, which is a great start.

      1. @rickflick, hah, online dating? No, not recently. I’m not looking that hard. I was just thinking that if I had a mate, I’d prioritize my mate over my job. But as I don’t have a mate, my work is the priority. I may be old-fashioned or peculiar, but I don’t think mate-finding can be rushed. I’m fine being alone until I’m not. I like my space. Thanks for the idea, though, and glad it worked for your daughter 🙂

        1. Exactly so. My daughter was at a point where she felt it was about time to make the change. I guess you have to be very ready to take such a major step.

  9. Thanks for the Sam Cooke link. Wonderful song, and beautiful voice. What a loss!

Others, please don’t confuse Wallis with Wallace, the name of one of our heroes in Scotland (and certainly not to be confused with a painted Mel Gibson).
