The hunt for terrorists continues in Paris, with 2 suspects dead (one by suicide) and 7 arrested in a raid early this morning in the suburb of St. Denis. All of Europe is on edge, and the recriminations and kneejerk proposals pour in. But the latest Jesus and Mo strip, called “Media,” merely reminds us that this stuff will be going on for years. The email with link to the strip came with a note from the author:
I’m still reeling in the aftershock of the events in Paris. It’s hard to make light hearted satire in the face of such things, which is why this week’s strip is a pre-written one (albeit one you probably haven’t seen before). See you next week.
In the meantime, Vive la France!
I’ll save you the trouble of that Google image search: go here.

I watched a couple of documentaries on the antiquated television last night on the subject of ISIS. One was about how ISIS is doing over in Afghanistan. This was a Frontline show by the way.
A pretty brave journalist was allowed to go into the remote area where ISIS has taken over from the Taliban and now runs this region. Their mission is to eventually take over all of Afghanistan and then, of course, the world.
They showed one of the ISIS instructors teaching school a group of children, maybe age 9 to 12 or so. They were getting the full course on the ISIS religious nonsense and lessons on handling and shooting guns and some explosives. The girls were allowed to sit in the back.
The Afghan journalist said at the end, that his country was doomed and there would never be peace.
As I occasionally say, with pointed finger : HERETICS! BURN THE HERETICS !!
This time, it is only 50% in jest.
Yust the traditional necklace, or do I have time to rig up something involving fire extinguishers (for contrast) to make a proper heretic-toasting flame-thrower?
The two standard responses to that:
1) You are characterizing Muslims as if they are all the same
2) Do you realize you have just offended 1.6 billion Muslims?
Sadly — and bizarrely — the whole issue of blasphemy laws doesn’t seem to be finally settled yet in the UK.
It is conceivable that the UK could outlaw Mohammed cartoons. Already they are, de facto, pretty much outlawed in all mainstream media.
E.g.: http://www.secularism.org.uk/blog/2015/11/a-timid-defence-of-free-speech-is-no-match-for-islamism-we-must-do-better
The soccer match Netherlands – Germany was cancelled yesterday due to a bomb threat.
Interestingly (and mysteriously) Google put a message (warning?) on my screen when I clicked one of the cartoons at the link. It said “Checking your browser” and something about taking five seconds. Then it “allowed me” to look at the cartoon. As a person who does a great deal of “googling” for sources I have never had that warning. Am I paranoid or just curious? What was Google checking my browser for? I thought they already knew everything about me.
I think the most likely possibility is that they suspected your computer of performing an automated or “suspicious” search. This could be because you use Tor, share an IP with somebody who uses Tor, have a computer infected by botnet software, or you just manually did some “suspicious” searches or too many searches in a short time… They have some (not always accurate) ways to check if it’s a real request or an automated one.
Another possibility is that they suspected the website of being malicious and wanted to check your browser for vulnerabilities, although I’ve never heard of them doing that.
Thanks for the info. And thanks to infiniteimprobabilit for the diagnosis – which is a distinct possibility. On the other hand listening to the Republicans telling us how they would run the country should make a lot of us paranoid. I have been voting since 1958 and have never encountered anything like this. One or two maybe but this is really scary. I live in Iowa and so do they.
You’re probably paranoid 😉
Google didn’t do it to me.
But I’ve had occasional messages from all sorts of sites, with several browsers, usually along the lines of “Your browser is an old version, please update” or “Some features of this site may not be available”
It’s more likely the site linked off the cartoon you clicked on, that did it, rather than Google itself.
cr
Damn!
That was a response to Michael Scullin, of course.
WP strikes again…
Mo still has a point in this cartoon. Maybe individuals on the Internet still publish cartoons of Mohamed, but few if any book publishers or mass media outlets will. Even Charlie Hebdo stopped publishing depictions of Mohamed after the attacks on them. So the fear tactics have largely worked…
