It’s Tuesday, the cruellest day, and although it’s partly cloudy this morning in Chicago, the sky is predicted to clear, giving us a sunny day with a high of 55° F (13°C). The weather is still very warm for this time of year. On this day in 1989, German citizens began tearing down the Berlin Wall and, in 1793, (according to Wikipedia), “a Goddess of Reason was proclaimed by the French Convention at the suggestion of Pierre Gaspard Chaumette.” On November 10, 1483, Martin Luther was born. We won’t get into that, but it’s worth nothing that the Dutch poet Jacob Cats was born on this day in 1577. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is showing some awareness that other creatures like food that she doesn’t.
A: What’s there?
Hili: Grapes.
A: You don’t like grapes.
Hili: Others do.
Ja: Co tam jest?
Hili: Winogrona.
Ja: Ty nie lubisz winogron.
Hili: Inni je lubią.

As lagniappe, reader John C. sent a link to a video of a cat named Red, who apparently and frequently likes to sit like a human.

Luther – that numpty – an enemy of reason!
Malgorzata – will you get a useful amount of grapes & if so do you do anything with them, or do the birds swoop in?!
We get plenty of grapes and our neighbours are getting most of them. Some are making wine, some are just eating them. I do not really think they are edible – definitely too sour for grapes – so I’m not doing anything with them. Hili and Cyrus share my taste but Andrzej and little Hania like them.
A reminder of Aesop’s Fable – The fox and the Grapes.
“Horses for courses”. Or grapes for Poles.
I’m just tucking in to a fruit called a pomelo – a large citrus. considering that I loathe and detest grapefruit, I find myself moderately surprised to like the moderate tartness of the pomelo. Horses for courses.
I saw something intriguingly disgusting sounding earlier and thought to wave it under PCCE’s nose, then thought better of it. I’m trying to remember what it was, but it was evidently another of those “one man’s meat is another man’s fox food” moments.
I like the grapefruit alright but, if you take the cholesterol med. you can’t do the grapefruit.
Cholesterol med? I’d better check that out ….
Oh, rude words. VERY rue words. Sideways and without lubrication. And some more rude words. Thank you for that pleasing news. I shall return the favour by adding to the list of interactions :
Actually, the interactions may not necessarily be bad enough to preclude mixing the two, on an occasional basis. I shall have to consult on this.
Hahahahaha!!! That Red is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time – he looks like Kermit the Frog.
Maybe Hili is wondering if the grapes are eggs that grow on vines? A true egg plant (and not the familiar one in the nightshade family) would be a favorite amongst cats, I should think….

I suspect she’s got her eyes on creepy crawlies in the grapes. We had grapes when I was a kid. They were a sweet variety, and loved them, but always let someone else do the picking as you never knew what would crawl out.
Wetas!
Good call! 😀
Hmmm…this was Down Under, right? Where even the mammals are venomous?
I grew up in wine country — Santa Rosa, California, the county seat of Sonoma. And Mom did pest management consulting for a couple of the top vineyards there. The closest you could conceivably get to a threat from creepy crawlies…would be if you yourself got aggressive towards the bees hanging out at the crusher after harvest. A local tradition is a “grape stomp”…grapes are dumped in a giant vat and people jump in, barefoot, to crush them. I’m sure somebody sometime must have stepped on a bee doing that and gotten stung, but I’ve never actually heard of it happening.
To me, the thought that you’d have to be wary of picking grapes makes about as much sense as urging caution before grabbing a pair of socks out of the dresser….

Not in NZ Ben, only in that over-sized country over the ditch that thinks it’s better than us. 🙂 (We just say, “Who won the rugby world cup this year? And who did we beat? And where did the horse who won the Melbourne Cup the other day come from? With a female rider no less.” Then remind them of the underarm bowling incident (cricket) back in 1981.)
There is one venomous spider in NZ, and it has a very small range – basically sand dunes in the warmer regions, so you wouldn’t find one in grapes anyway. Bites are rare as it keeps away from humans, and isn’t aggressive if we blunder in on them anyway. I’ve never heard of anyone dying from a bite. Wikipedia says the last known death was 1901, and the last bite was a Canadian tourist in 2012.
It is, of course, related to the Aussie red-back, so we can blame them for that as well.
There’s a particular creepy-crawlie that is found in grapes in Gisborne NZ (where I grew up), which is not dangerous at all, but I hate anyway, and that’s what I was avoiding.
A Canadian, eh? Figures. An American would have just whipped out a monster handgun, shouted, “Eat lead, motherfuckin’ spider terrorist!” and caused the extinction of a few endangered species of marsupials with all the stray bullets…but at least he would have been safe from the spider. Those Canadian pacifists clearly don’t stand a chance — and it’s not like their Commie pinko socialized medicine is going to save them after they get bitten, either!

NZ’s “commie pinko socialized medicine” saved his life, so he didn’t need the Canadian stuff. And it didn’t cost him anything either because the NZ and Canadian governments have an agreement so we’re eligible for free healthcare when we’re tourists in each other’s countries.
And the American with the gun would’ve ended up in prison where he belonged for killing any endangered species. However, all the marsupials in NZ are introduced from Australia, and are mostly pests. If the American killed a few possums, after thanking him we’d imprison him for discharging a gun in a national park. He’d make the national news for such a heinous act, and reinforce what we all think of Americans. 🙂
Pshaw! Liberal lies from your reality-based worldview. Your Jesus-hatin’ NZ Gestapo pansies wouldn’t even be able to pry the gun from the cold, dead fingers of the American’s hands, for starters — everyone knows that! Let alone withstand the awesome firepower of his guns. And especially not with Jesus as his target selector!
