WordPress wants information

October 26, 2015 • 12:45 pm

As I’ve mentioned twice, I am getting quite a few comments that post as “Anonymous” because people aren’t filling in (or their device isn’t auto-filling-in) their names and email addresses. If you’re one of these, could you answer the WordPress person’s questions below? (Just put the info in a comment.)

Thanks.

If you’re still having this issue, could you let me know if you’ve noticed any common threads from people who have emailed you to let you know that their names have appeared as anonymous?
For instance, are they using a particular browser, or are they using an autocomplete feature rather than typing their names?

  1. I have the problem in Explorer (ancient version) & Firefox (not sure which version 35.0 ?) – but it seems that it is the web page not ‘remembering’ the name automatically, though when I start to type in Firfox the browser comes up with a small white box so it suggests my mname (obviously I have ticked to remember added details in the settings).

    1. Same here, with Firefox current version. On both computers I use to reply from, suddenly the Name and Email boxes that were always filled in are blank, but when I go to fill them in, Ffx remembers them. This happened once before back in the spring, IIRC, and once I’d filled in it was back to business as usual. When you’re used to this being the case, you tend not to notice when they’re blank.

        1. Using current Firefox (41.0.2), I always have to fill in the “Name” and “Email” boxes, but the first letter in each is enough to bring up the necessary info.

It used to be that if I did this once, and then kept WEIT open as a pinned tab, then theses fields would remain completed, and I would remain subscribed (with the bar along the top) as long as I didn’t close Firefox or shut down the computer.

Recently I have found myself unsubscribed for no apparent reason, when in the past I would have remained subscribed.

        2. Having had to log in to post the above, I then had to refresh the page to see my comment. This did not happen before.

I note that now that I am posting this follow-up, the “Comment” box has “Logged in as HaggisForBrains. Log out?” above it, as opposed to having the three boxes showing already completed, as some others have implied.

          1. Would that ‘Logged in…’ dialog be a feature of Firefox, rather than WP?

(I never see it, but I never log in to WP)

          2. I’m posting this reply on Chrome. I’ve had to fill in my name and email, but again, all I needed to do was type the first initial and the rest appeared (this is the first time I’ve used Chrome since last June). Now that I’m logged in, I’ll post another comment shortly, once this has appeared.

          3. Now that I’m logged in, I get the same as before, vis: an empty dialogue box with a line above it that says “Logged in as HaggisForBrains. Log out?” Both the “HaggisForBrains” and the “Log out?” are clickable links, as with Firefox. As always there are two “notify” tick boxes underneath, which I don’t tick.

          4. Back to Firefox, and I’ve just realised that you say you never log in to WP. I always log in to WP to comment – when I click on “Reply” the “Post a Comment” box appears as I have described it above. I can’t see how to post without logging in, except perhaps as “Anonymous”. I’ve never tried posting without logging in. I may give it a try now.

          5. Fifteen minutes later and my anonymous test still hasn’t appeared, but perhaps I’m expecting too much.

          6. “Fifteen minutes later and my anonymous test still hasn’t appeared, but perhaps I’m expecting too much.”

Oh, sometimes they take for-EVER! It’s noticeable because I usually realize I forgot to fill in the missing fields just after I’ve clicked Post Comment, and then I want to “claim” my anony-post ASAP…so of course it keeps not appearing…and not appearing…and not appearing…

          7. @Diane

Exactly what happens to me, too.

So (sometimes) I then laboriously re-type the comment (with name), hit ‘Post’, and then invariably my signed comment AND the original both promptly appear…

    2. I’m having the exact same problem in Explorer 11, today (10/27). It is no longer saving my name and email between entries like it used to.

  2. I’m using Firefox, and to my knowledge nothing has changed on my end. I do not, and never have, used auto complete features. Up until recently the WordPress cookie would remember my name and email info for this site and I would only have to reenter it after deleting the cookie. The cookie is there, and I just commented on a post but it isn’t filling in my information.

  3. I use Chrome and my name and email are usually filled in but are now blank. However if I double click on each field the proper info appears.

I sometimes use Firefox but haven’t tried it there yet. I will do so and report back.

      1. I tried double clicking, but nothing happened. In order not to be anonymous I had to enter my name and email address. Previously these were already filled in.

      1. I was going to say much the same with Chrome and that refreshing the page brings up my name and e-mail in the “post a comment” section. Except when I went to do the same this time the boxes concerned stayed blank. Filled them in manually but might not have noticed if I wasn’t aware there’s an ongoing problem.

  4. WordPress, I’m doing nothing different than I’ve done for, what, 5 years or more now? I mostly use IE but have tried Chrome & Firefox now and then. Other WordPress blogs continue to “remember” me and fill in my name & email fields automatically. I’m sure this annoying problem has nothing to do with us users.

  5. Autocomplete works just fine. (Type in the first two letters of my name, and the rest pops up as an option.)

What’s NOT happening (and DID until a few days ago) is my name and email auto-appearing in the Post a Comment box before I do anything.

  6. Post a comment is still coming up blank. I’m using Safari 6.2.8 on a Mac. Auto fill is on.

  7. I use Firefox on a machine with an Ubuntu operating system and remain logged in to my Word Press account and have never had any trouble with it filling in my name. I look at a couple of other WP b*ogs, and have no trouble with them, either.

      1. I wish I could confirm that but I’m using Debian Linux on all my machines and still having to type my name in every time.

(Mind you, there are hundreds of other perfectly good reasons to use Linux).

I think WordPress just hates me 🙁

  8. I’m a Firefox user. The system used to remember name and email address, and didn’t allow posting without these. Now, it doesn’t remember, and comments without name and address show up as anonymous.

  9. I’m a Firefox user. The system used to remember name and email address, and didn’t allow posting without these. Now, it doesn’t remember, and if you comment without name and address, it doesn’t show up, as it used to be. But if you repost then with name and address, the comment appears twice, as anonymous and as the chosen name.

  10. I’m relying on the WordPress site to load my credentials. It isn’t doing this on an iPhone an iPad (both using safari) or computers using Chrome. This makes me think it’s an application on the site not reading my cookies. Mmmmmm COOKIES!

  11. I use firefox. My info does not autofill but it does autocomplete. That is it offers me my full name when I enter the 1st letter and it offers my full email when I enter the 1st letter of that.
Of course it used to just automatically enter these things for me.
I will look at the settings for cookies when I get the chance.

  12. I wonder if it could be the iPad?

I just looked the post a comment bit – which is normally filled in – but this time it was blank. I think this happened after an update.

    1. Nah – it’s not the clients we’re using. It’s something not working how we expect it to from WordPress.

  13. I’m using Chrome and the hitherto completed name and email fields were empty as others have found. In my case I had to write in the name but the email address field auto-completed itself.

  14. Conclusion: Someone somewhere has intercoursed with something, and it isn’t any of us.

    1. In our departmental meetings we regularly talk about ‘articulation’ between courses in our program. But I hope to someday ‘accidentally’ call it “intercourse coordination” and see if anyone loses it.

  15. I typically use Explorer, and teh issue is not saving initially not not saving the info on repeats.

  16. I’ve NOT had (TTBOMK) the “Anonymous” bug, but yesterday (2015-10-25) had a couple of instances of images coming up as linkified bits of text, and about a half-hour on the 26th (GMT, mid-afternoon) of the site giving repeated “secure connection interrupted” messages. I took it as some clocks for updating library versions being out of sync and triggering a reset.
But my connection is a bit flakey, so I’m note sure of cause and effect on this.

  17. WP is not saving my name and email address across browser (Chrome) sessions or even between same-session visits to this site. This is new behavior. I have not had this issue with other sites. Browser knows what was in those fields but I need to prompt it with a character or two.

  18. Do the people who are having problems have a WordPress account? I have one, and I’m always automatically logged in when I go to a WordPress site.

  19. I usually use Opera (under Debian Linux) and WP usually pre-fills in the name and email for me. (I assume it uses a cookie).

In the last week or so, it hasn’t done this, I’ve had to type name & email in myself, every time.

I’ve also used Chromium (under Linux) and also had to fill in my own name and email.

In the past, when I’ve used a different browser or a different laptop, I’ve had to fill in name & email the first time only. After that it’s done automatically for me.

But now, every single time, I have to fill in name & email. Otherwise my post appears, after a delay, as Anonymous.

  20. May I respectfully suggest to everyone affected by this issue (and even those who aren’t) that if you submit a comment and it doesn’t show up immediately, do not resubmit it on the assumption that the Internet ate it.

Assume instead that your (possibly anonymous) comment was queued for moderation or automated spam-filtering or whatever, and that it will show up in due course if you just wait a bit and refresh the page. Then you can take credit for it if necessary without double-posting.

  21. Chrome
    ANDROID

the name and email no longer autofill

This is happening on another WordPress blog that I read, so it is not just confined to WEIT

  22. Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/45.0.2454.101 Safari/537.36

    Autofill.

  23. Quick test, box shows logged in as Graham Martin-Royle, let’s see if it posts as me. Using Chrome, don’t know which version.

  24. Well, I thought I’d try this with Chrome. I haven’t used Chrome for quite a while, and for this comment, the form has fill-in spaces for my user name and email (and website, too, which I didn’t bother to enter). And now to see what happens when I post it

    1. Hmm, what it did when I submitted the comment above was ask me to log into Word Press, since it didn’t recognize me on “this computer” — which is the one I always use, so the difference must have been using Chrome instead of Firefox. Anyway, if you have a WP account and are logged into it, apparently the comments post right away and the site doesn’t ask for name and login.

  25. Question: do the people who are having trouble posting see a grey box around the post window that has “Logged in as username. Log out?” That message is there if I’m logged in to WP regardless of the browser (Firefox or Chrome) I use. And the site posts my comments (such as this one) without asking me to add my name.

    1. Speaking for myself, no. Probably because I don’t have a WP account. That has not prevented it from recognizing me the last half decade or more, however.

Also, as many of us have previously stated, it’s only on this particular site that the problem exists. At least, in my case, amongst the small number of WP bl*gs I’m subscribed to.

    2. Same goes for me as for Diane – I don’t have a WP account, but (until last week) my name was always pre-filled-in, so long as I’d used that particular browser before. I think it probably used a cookie.
Now my name isn’t, I have to enter it every time.
