Well, I’m sad to see that the inexorable decline of temperatures that leads to winter is beginning: here’s the weather predictions for Chicago this week, with highs only touching 60°F (16°C). And we have the added bonus of rain showers:
Time to put on a coat and prepare for real cold. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is expressing her own religion as Ultimate Concern:
Hili: Do you happen to know why this bowl is empty?
A: I do, but I don’t know how to tell you.
When I asked Malgorzata to clarify what Andrzej meant, she replied, “One of our Polish readers explained to those who didn’t understand: “The bowl is empty because the cat food is hidden – inside the cat”.
Hili: Nie wiesz przypadkiem dlaczego ta miseczka jest pusta?
Ja: Wiem, ale nie wiem jak ci to powiedzieć.

Hili’s not buying it.
There seems to be another non-Euclidian geometry going on here. Clearly it appears that the universe is divided into multiple domains, minimally “in-cat” and “out-cat” (depending on circumstances, another class of sub-domains of “out-cat” may be recognised as “other-cat”, but the rules for this distinction are not clear. At least, in the NOT “in-cat” domain). and obviously different rules apply in different domains. This is not unprecedented – the well-known Riemann geometries (for cases of Riemann =/= Euclid : a conjecture suspected generally true, but hard to prove. At least, if you’re doing it right. Don’t look behind the curtain!) where different rules apply at the edge of the space (“infinity”) to the interior of the space.
Anyway, the fundamental problem is this : while cats clearly recognise a concept similar to the “in-cat” versus NOT “in-cat” domains, they simultaneously recognise that as cat, they are the only thing in the universe. (At least, the only thing that matters.) And that clearly conflicts with the recognition that, minimally, sometimes the food is not in the “in-cat” domain, and that is important.
Clearly I don’t understand Feline Curved Space Geometry. Could Hili elaborate?
Does this geometry issue explain why even a small catling can take up a whole sofa AND a dog bed in another room?
I need coffee.
Could we name this Cat-allegory Theory?
“Does this geometry issue explain why even a small catling can take up a whole sofa AND a dog bed in another room?”
No. You have to think Schrodinger here – the cat is simultaneously on the couch and on Cyrus’ bed and on neither. If Jerry looks at the couch, Hili materialises there: same if Cyrus want to have a lie-down.
Which is why Hili is concerned about her empty bowl – there should be food in her tum AND in the bowl. Something is wrong with the universe.
It’s been cold and rainy lately here too and my one maple tree lost all its leaves over night.
I’m probably going to out my Miata into hibernation today as I’ve been driving my other car a lot more. It’s no longer convertible weather.
I live in the Chicago area too, and I really like the weather we’re having now. With it being cool, I can jog outside without getting too sweated up. I do so wearing shorts and a t shirt, and marvel at so many others on the bicycle path wearing sweatshirts and even coats. And when the temperature is in the 50s, it’s comfortable for me even when the humidity is high. And rain? I don’t care if it rains–it doesn’t stop me from doing anything. As for winter, it doesn’t bother me much except that it can be a real challenge to drive during a snow storm. What I don’t like is summer: too hot and sunny for me.
I’m pretty sure the triple-digit weather is finally behind us here in Arizona, though we’ve got at least a few more 90°+ days. But it’s cooling off at night! The windows are open the majority of the time, finally.

I’m in the Texas hill country and finally the temps are cool at night and the a/c is off. I look forward to this time of year and love it.
I’m going to chock up the weather as just more warming climate. The idea of making through October here in the Midwest with Chicago like temps. and no freeze yet?
I have a cat here in the house that is much smaller than staff and yet constantly kicks me out of chairs. So a dog would have no chance.
The Dutch autumn hasn’t been too bad, so far. Plenty of grey skies, although today was sunny and fairly mild. My fiance and I got some ice cream, and walked around the city a bit, since days like this will probably be rare over the coming months.
Spring in Melbourne came incredibly early and hot, broke many records. Probably means summer will be a killer. Global warming adds interest to a climate already well known to be far too interesting.
