    1. Erm…of course it’s fake. It’s not even pretending to be real.

As a certain long-since-sold-out Web site put it, “It’s funny. Laugh.”

      1. Yeah, I know. It’s fake. But it’s so well done. Props to the people who made it.

  1. I didn’t watch the video. Which miracle is it? Did he pull a quarter from someone’s ear?

          1. Thanks, chris and Diane. I’ve been on the MV _Britannia_ visiting the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries and more. Too busy on land to get on line … and it’s too costly at sea!

      1. Why bother proving it’s fake? As Ben Goren wrote, It’s not even pretending to be real”. And it’s pretty funny. We could use some more making fun of this fraud and less fawning over him. It’s too bad that everything he does is a show also, meant to convince us that the church has changed. The Catholic church is the same nasty, self-perpetuating, abusive institution it ever was no matter what face this pope puts on it. The worst thing I witnessed during his trip to the U.S. was his speech chastising the abusers among the priests. Like the rest of the church, he speaks as if the scandal is in the past, the church has dealt with it and it will never be permitted to happen again. Meanwhile, it continues. There have been no real safeguards put in place to protect children from pedophile priests and there have been far too few criminal charges brought against the abusers. I know the authorities are up against the statute of limitations in many cases, but there have been tens of thousands of abusive priests in the united States alone and yet I’ve only heard of a couple of dozen prosecutions. The local parish priest my ex-wife insisted on bringing my sons to talk to was run out of town less than ten years ago after it was discovered he has abused hundreds of young boys. They ‘disappeared’ him one night. The congregation was told he was in a rehabilitation facility. If the church had made a real change it would have taken the lead in making sure he was criminally prosecuted instead of secreted off without anyone getting a chance to have him arrested. The obvious point of this video is that if you’re impressed by old tricks, you’ll be impressed by this pope. I just think it’s too sick and serious to be funny.

        1. I used to play organ at the church here in town (Sacred Heart), where this priest once officiated. No joke. (check out the alleged perp’s name)

As far as I remember (perhaps I am repressing something horrible, but probably not), he was a part of the local parish about 10 years after I helped my folks out with the musical duties. I do remember getting strange calls from a detective agency in the late 90s, though.

          1. Bit awkward! If you had to have the same name as a criminal, you’d rather it was just about any other crime!

          2. Yep. That was the first thing the detectives asked me. I clarified my middle initial. THEN they asked me what I did for a living…. “uh… er… I’m a sex researcher?”

  2. Of course, canonization is like having your picture put on US currency or stamps – it can’t happen until after the person is dead.

  3. That’s nothing, after my anointment as the Assistant Pope AssPope of the Universal Papal Druid Egyptian Aztec Society UPDEAS I smote my son with my Harry Potter wand causing pop to come out his nose.

      1. Absolutely. Most of my family is retired and looking for silly things to do in the winter.

  4. When John Paul II was elected, this was a popular quip in Catholic circles:

Q: What were the pope’s first three miracles?

    A: He walked under water.

He make a blind man deaf.

    He cured a ham.

  5. The last time a pope tried that was in the 14th century. Everything fell over, leaving stains on the cloth, which created the shroud of Turin.

  6. Reblogged this on Nina's Soap Bubble Box and commented:
I went to Knox Presbyterian in New Westminster – Rev. Bell put a quarter on the table and offered it to any kid who could pick it off the table with ony one finger.

For a while there was silence, then a small boy ran up, put his index finger on the quarter and slide it off the table edge into his other palm.

it was not the expected solution – he got to keep the quarter – a full week allowance in those days for most – and then the Rev demonstrate some over complicted pinch and cluth method.

anyway – preisthood is showmanship, misdirection and illusions

but sometimes, if you lighten up, it can be good for a laugh

before the sadness of how clear it is that religion is a mental illness – lack of humour being a serious symptom
