Readers’ wildlife photos

Today we feature some of the backlog of photos I have from Stephen Barnard, photographer par excellence of birds, fancy cars, artiodactyls, and border collies.

Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis):

Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis). They’re gathering into flocks prior to migration:

These Swainson’s Hawks (Buteo swainsoni) were looking at me and Deets with a considerable degree of suspicion.

The first herd of elk (Cervus canadensis) I’ve seen in the fields this fall.

  1. Terrific, as always. The red tailed hawk in the 3rd photo is posed almost exactly like the ‘too much lens’ photo from yesterday.

  2. I count eleven of those lovely animals. If there is a Buck around, probably hiding in the tall grass.

    1. Male elk are called bulls and females are called cows. There was no bull with this group but I’ve heard them bugling recently.

  3. Stephen, as always, excellent and awe-inspiring photography. Your action shots are sensational!!

  4. All very good, but my favorite of this bunch is the two Swainson’s Hawks. They are definitely interested in what you and Deets are doing! The one on the right is postured just like a cat might be in similar circumstances.

  5. The red-tail looks like s/he is doing freestyle. Good head position, turned on the side, and very streamlined.

  6. Beautiful BIFs, but my favorite is the inquisitive expressions of the Swainson’s Hawks. That little tilt of the head is priceless.

  7. I’m reconsidering my ID on that pair of hawks. I think they’re juvenile Red-tailed, probably siblings, and not Swainson’s. Hard to tell them apart in in that pose.
