Friday: Hili dialogue

October 2, 2015 • 1:04 am

I must rush, as I have only fifteen minutes before I don the monkey suit and head for Torun for the Big Lecture. Unless my writing colleagues pitch in, posting will be almost nonexistent today, but indulge me as I have to go about my Father’s (Ceiling Cat’s) work. In the meantime, Hili is, as always when she’s not napping, in search of noms (that’s me photographing her):

A: Hili, where are you escaping to?
Hili: Into the valley because here people are scaring the mice away.

In Polish:
Ja: Hili, gdzie uciekasz?
Hili: W dolinę, bo tu ludzie myszy płoszą.

  1. Woke up here to the news that Roseburg, Oregon has been added to the sad litany of American place names that will forever be associated with mass shootings. Astonishingly, the local church pastor who I heard interviewed on the BBC this morning suggested that if students had been armed the massacre would have been stopped or prevented. What does it take to persuade some people that fewer, not more, guns are needed to avoid these depressingly frequent massacres?

        1. You should have heard Fox last night! “I’m sure the President is sincere in what he’s say, but …” with different endings depending on the commentator. “Another shooting in a gun-free zone – when will they learn that invites these crazies.” Etc.

In New Zealand and Japan the kids get under their desks for earthquake drills. Australia and Britain don’t even have that.

    1. I wonder if the pastor keeps a loaded pistol in the pulpit, in the space under the bible.

    2. “One witness said the attacker demanded to know students’ religion before shooting them…”

      Now there’s a provocative statement.

  2. Love the perspective of this photo. It shows so clearly the relative importance of cats and humans…
