Hili’s staff was up late tonight (I’m writing this on Monday evening), so I was sent this dialogue in advance. It’s been hot in Dobrzyn, and it’s hot where I am now, which happens to be Winnemucca, Nevada. It’s a casino-and-hotel filled whistle stop on the long, desolate stretch of Interstate 80 that runs through Nevada. I drove only six hours today rather than twelve, as I wanted to visit the highly-regarded Martin Hotel, one of the last remaining family-style Basque restaurants in the West. It used to be a boarding house for Basques, who came to the West to work as shepherds, and the Martin Hotel dishes out copious Basque meals, served family style (you’re seated with strangers). I haven’t eaten all day, and am looking forward to a fine feed. I’ll bring my camera so you can enjoy it vicariously.
Meanwhile, heeeeeere’s Hili, resting during the D*g Days of Poland:
Hili: It’s hot.Cyrus: Very hot.
Hili: Gorąco.
Cyrus: Okropnie gorąco.

You’ve been to Winnemucca, man!
(Just like Hank Snow, who owns this song, NOT Johnny Cash!)
I’m enjoying imagining these dudes with fashionably long hair. A bit like a Necker cube, it’s hard to keep the image.
Here’s a version with fashionably long hair that you might like. (Actually it’s a cover of the original version, which was Australian.)
h/t Stash on this!
Enjoy the meal. Speaking of weather – went from hot humid yesterday to 59 degrees this morning in the Midwest. Rain started in April and every few days it just keeps coming. No chance of drought here…you can bet on it.
Bliss!
The dry weather continues in South East England – July started with a record high of 376

We have had only 180mm of rain this year…

I expect Hili will find the cherry trees are parched.
Wow! Thetford Forest on fire. People going to the hospital in Norwich. After I convert those darn metrics…98F degrees. Less than 7.5 inches of rain in 6 months. We probably got more than that in May. Possibly south England is the new California.
yeah, we had tornados or rumors of tornados around KC Mo. It’s actually chilly outside. In July. at least the flooding hasn’t been as bad as it was in 1993
Basking beasties!
I wonder what uniform they wear in the martin Hotel?! … 😉
Sorry – you can’t take me anywhere!
I’ve only eaten basque food once, made from a recipe I found, I think it was some sort of chicken and peppers dish, I don’t remember, but it had copious amounts of smoked paprika, and that was a revelation to my mouth!
In Spanish:
Hili: Scorchio.
Cyrus: Mucho Scorchio.
Once you’re done eating, it may be a good thing the Basque Hotel is right there.
Winnemucca! You’re in one of my favorite parts of the country. Not far from Winnemucca is the town of Paradise Valley, where an uncle-or-the-like of my parents’s generation is a free-range cattle rancher…and not far from there is Buckskin Mountain. Grandpa used to live in a cabin near the summit of Buckskin Mountain, and there’s a long-abandoned silver mine around the side of the mountain at about the same elevation that there’re some other family ties to. Growing up, we would spend summer vacations in the cabin, and I think that might even be where my parents did their honeymoon.
…and the sourdough you can make from there is something special…I can still taste the pancakes….

Oh, Man, Jerry! You’re on my home turf. I grew up on Hwy. 50, which runs parallel with I-80, about 100miles south.
Spent 13 weeks in Carson City last Summer on work. You MUST fo to Villa Basque Deli. i ate there two-three times a week during that stint.
Also, there is a “Thai Basil” restaurant there that bests any I’ve had. Call and ask if they will make their custom Massaman Curry. It is different, and better, than any I’ve tasted.
Carson City was a surprising gastronomic revelation, for a town of only 58,000
I’ve eaten at Martin Hotel. It was a great meal. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
