Four felid posts in one day? Why not? This tw**t from CarnivoreScience was sent to Matthew Cobb by Randy.

I presume the photographer survived. I want to know, though, how he knew the cat was a female.

She was hunting. Like males everywhere, male mountain lions are so lazy they won’t even get up to make themselves a sandwich.
Maybe he’s going by size? In cougars the males can be significantly bigger; if you see an adult under 100 lb, it’s probably female.
My second guess would be territory/familiarity. I.e., this photographer knows this area, and either has seen this particular cat before or knows he’s in the territory of a female.
Assuming you didn’t die of fright, at least you can rest assured that she knows where to bite to make it quick.
Great photo
Very cool photo. I hope the photographer was wearing diapers.
Looks like she exiting a space warp portal.
That, or has broken the sound barrier.
Like this!
That was *exactly* the image I was thinking of.
Maybe he saw the gender as it was running past him, if it were me I would have been behind that beautiful beast as fast as possible, not in front 🙂
A joke: Two men are camping when a bear crashes into their campsite. One man grabs his sneakers and starts to put them on. The other man exclaims “Are you crazy? You can’t outrun a bear!” The first man says: “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.”
… but the first camper hadn’t reached for his sneakers. He’d just thrown the honey pot to the far side of the camp and was setting up his camera.
Maybe he was hunting . . . .
Must have had some hint the lion was there before the jump. Even so, probably need a change of underwear.
Male Mt. Lions have rounder heads because of male cat jaw?
I’m assuming (or hoping) large telephoto lens.
Spectacular photo! Would make a great poster.
There was a fascinating tv programme broadcast on BBC last night (23 June) about Mountain Lions. It followed the work of the Panthera Teton research project led by Dr Mark Elbroch which has been running for 15 years and uses GPS-satellite tags, radio-tracking and motion-triggered cameras amongst other techniques to follow the animals and study their behaviour and ecology.
I believe it is intended to air the film in the US as well some time, but I don’t know when. Look out for it – it is well worth watching, with some great footage of the lions including some very cute kittens!
