And so another week begins, with three more weeks left of school in Chicago (we’re on the quarter system and start in early October). My daily back report: a bit worse than yesterday because, feeling much better, I was not sufficiently careful to avoid moving in injurious ways. It’s clear this will take a while to heal, although it’s much improved from a week ago. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili mourns the lack of easy access to noms:
Hili: Why do starlings build their nests so high?
A: I have no idea.
In Polish:
Hili: Dlaczego szpaki zakładają gniazda tak wysoko?
Ja: Nie mam pojęcia.

Ah! But finally a drop of rain in Dobrzyn!
This was a chance to explain selection to Hili.
Indeed. Andrzej could have said: “The ones who build them lower left no descendants.” But I doubt Hili would have understood.
Or, more simply: “And this was scarcely odd, because / They’d eaten every one [who nested lower].” I think Hili would understand.

Hi Hili:
What is the leafy plant in view? My guess: Bloodroot (Sanguinaria?) or Wild Ginger? or something else?
Looks like “elephant’s ears” to me, but if you can get it fossilized and bring it back in a hundred million years I’d have a better chance of identifying it.
