The Albatross is here (in my office)!

April 21, 2015 • 9:15 am

I have two real hardbound copies right here! It’s always a thrill to see the final product in the flesh (actually, in the paper). It goes on sale a little less than a month from today—May 19. And for the last time I’ll ask those readers who want to buy the hardback to do it as a pre-order (venues are here), as those count as first week’s sales.

As always, those who want to mail books to me for autographing are welcome to do so as long as they enclose a stamped and self-addressed return envelope. You might even get a cat drawn in it if you ask nicely. . .

    1. They should be winging their way across the sea – “fly free little albatross, glide over the oceans & poop on the counter-factualists!”

      1. Why little albatross? Just looking at the page count, 336 pages, it seems to be a medium-sized one. I’m actually hoping for a big raptor with sizeable and sharp claws.

  1. I’m sorry, Jerry, but you have just GOT to pose for a publicity shot with “it” hung around your neck. You’ve been calling it the Albatross for that long that you can’t avoid the visual pun.
When you send out copies by post for review etc, do they become Wandering Albatrosses?

  2. I was trying to determine how thick it is but cannot tell from the picture. Just have to wait.

      1. Just right. Reflects your lucid, economic style, and I think more people are apt to pick up a reasonably sized book on this topic than would take a chance on a tome.

  3. The Albatross, now, is definitely Fact, not Faith. Well done, Professor Ceiling Cat!

      1. If you don’t mind suggestions, I think Dawkins would be great for the audiobook. I’ve heard him read On the Origin of Species, and he has a very nice and pleasant voice.

  4. Is that the pre-release dust jacket, or the way it’ll show up at fine bookstores and in our mailboxes?

  5. I guess you will be waiting for a call from Bill O’Reilly so he can show you and the rest of Fox viewers just how wrong you are.

  6. and pinker’s review contains such a verbally brilliant and witty slam of accomodationists.

“The truth is not always halfway between two extremes: some propositions are flat wrong. In this timely and important book, Jerry Coyne expertly exposes the incoherence of the increasingly popular belief that you can have it both ways: that God (or something God-ish, God-like, or God-oid) sort-of exists; that miracles kind-of happen; and that the truthiness of dogma is somewhat-a-little-bit-more-or-less-who’s-to-say-it-isn’t like the truths of science and reason.”
—Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology, Harvard University; author of The Better Angels of Our Nature

  7. JERRY, you will autograph a copy of your new book if we mail you the book??? THAT IS EXTREMELY NICE OF YOU——-

    where do we mail it??

any hope of THE DAILY SHOW with Jon STEWART interviewing you on one of his last few daily shows??? HAS HIS producers contacted you?how do they decide what author gets on his show?–your book is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND TIMELY AND NEEDS TO BE READ BY THE MASSES.
I would save that DAILY SHOW interview on my DVR for a “billion” years.
I hope the book is a best seller.

        1. Well, so what? The idea is to get exposure to a larger audience. Ones that may not have heard of JAC, and certainly ones who are not used to someone questioning religion at all.

  8. UK people – I got an email from Amazon UK saying the release date has been pushed back.

“Unfortunately, the release date for the item(s) listed below was changed by the supplier, and we need to provide you with a new estimated delivery date based on the new release date:

Coyne, Jerry A. “Faith Versus Fact: Why Science and Religion are Incompatible”

    Estimated arrival date: July 02 2015 – July 04 2015″

  9. So is this officially your 3rd published book? Three’s a charm. I hope it reaches many, many people!
I wish I had it for my trip to Boston next week…6 hour flight…oh well, May is just around the corner.

  10. Terrific.

I hope Jerry’s book gets some good press and starts some more discussion. The book’s thesis is one that interests me quite a bit.

    1. HIs specific thing is drawing cats. For his faithful cat readers. He could probably draw a hammer or mouse, but that’s not what Prof. Ceiling Cat *does.*

  11. It must be such a thrill to hold the actual product in your hands. It’s a treat just to see it! Congrats!

  12. Must be nice to have the copy in hand.

Would love an autographed copy, but I’d imagine the return postage to Australia would be brutal. If you ever make it down to Oz for a speaking tour (ANU is right down the road!), I’ll be there with my hardcover of WEIT in hand.

  13. Congratulations, Jerry! It must be wonderful to see the final payoff of your work at last. Can’t wait to read it when it crosses the Atlantic. 🙂
