A gustatory interlude

If you’re hungry (or want to be), read the vignettes of memorable seafood meals contributed by different writers to the New York Times: “In Asia, tastes of the sea.” The photos are fantastic, as are the meals. Here’s a Bengali fish curry, a dish with which I’m well familiar:

  1. We had a chicken and potato curry with dinner on Saturday night: and there are leftovers, so for once I get to satisfy a WEIT-induced craving at breakfast!

I also made a coconut curry soup with chicken and kale last week, but there was none of that left after dinner. Though it turns out that leftover naan makes for a child-pleasing salami sandwich.

Boy is this website great for the appetite!

    1. That sounds fab! Sadly, the curry chicken is all gone, so I’m going to make curry shrimps with tons of coconut milk and hot peppers, as well as wild rice on the side.

  2. Walking my daughter home from pre-school yesterday (first day warm enough to walk in months), we saw a restaurant which advertised “Isan Thai Cuisine.” We had never heard of this, so we went in for lunch. Isan is a region of Thailand bordering on Laos. The menu had typical Thai food, but also some Laotian stuff that we’d never had before. It was very good. Also, across the street from my apartment is a Cambodian sandwich shop which is one of my favorite places in the whole city. I love New York. It’s not everywhere that you can find such obscure regional cuisines within walking distance of home.

    1. I love finding new cuisine. One day walking around Ashville NC my wife and I came across a Nepalese restaurant. My wife rolled her eyes as I made an immediate bee-line for it. Authentic, native run and staffed, and to top it all off it was a buffet. I got to try it all. It was a wonderful meal, lots of stuff completely new to me. Even my wife, who is rather unadventurous when it comes to food, enjoyed it.
