A note to readers

March 6, 2015 • 8:55 am

I’ve mentioned this once before, but some people have either missed it or disregarded it. I get a huge volume of emails from readers giving me feedback, suggested topics or links, and even errors or typos in my posts (please do let me know if there’s a typo or howler). I welcome that, as I like to think that the site is the locus of a community of interacting people, and I also get many of my topics from readers.

But as readership has increased, the emails have gotten overwhelming. To try to reduce the volume, I ask readers again to email me no more than once per day. I can’t handle more than that, and there’s also a chance that your emails will get lost or mixed up.

Thanks.

  1. Sometimes WEIT is faster than any spellchecker I have.
Let’s try to assume that most WEIT fans are “well reasoned and insightful”
Replying to typos and grammer errors are a waste of space.
“anyone who says otherwise is itchin’ for a fight” 🙂

    1. I try to assume *all* WEIT fans are reasoned and insightful! And I also like to think a person who sends proofreading emails is trying to be helpful.

I can’t recall a time I noticed a misspelling or object misdirection (in a post on scientists and theologians, for example, saying one thinks thus-and-such when the writer means the other) myself, but I know they happen based on comments.

If I tried to produce the volume of ideas PCC does, my inbox and comment threads would consist primarily of people being “helpful.”

  2. Who is writing this man once a day? Here’s a test: If you aren’t a family member, a very close friend, or a co-worker on an active project, there is no reason for you to be writing jerry coyne once a day…let alone multiple times a day. this applies to everyone in your life.

clearly, the volume of mail is over whelming him, creating noise. and, if this blog get’s noisy, i’ll be very sad. now, dr. coyne could allay some of his woe by hiring an assistant, or employing an automated filtering process to filter the noise of multi-posters. but there is a cost to that, and who should pay?

there is a caveat, of course, for public and elected officials. if you have that much to say, you should direct it towards your congress person. they need to hear from the people more often to help dislodge the money from their ears.

    1. Well, I like to tell Jerry how the weather is and what coat I’m wearing. Then I tell him what I’m eating at each meal, including snacks (with pictures). I also ask him which shoes or boots I should wear and then what time I’m going to bed.

      Too much?

      😀

      1. ha! i never forget to send him real time pics of my dogs and their goings on. breakfast, lunch and dinner at the minimum. and then at least one, for his ears only, “Dear, Dr. Jerry” podcast which i record daily as i drive around, and mail to him, unedited, from my phone. it’s important to stay connected, because a friendship like ours must never be allowed flounder.

  3. I don’t want to sound like I’m encouraging everyone to email Prof Coyne, but the one time I did (question about the evolution of reptiles), he answered about twenty minutes later. My son was so impressed when I said, ‘well, according to a professor in America, who has just emailed me…’

  4. In this first email from me I would like to recommend a lecture of the Dutch professor Ewald Engelen …. explaining with perfect clarity why it is right and necessary that students are occupying the administrative center of the University of Amsterdam (the Maagdenhuis) and why academic staff is now massively supporting this action.

  5. Just an idea…
There seems to be a real need to communicate. Perhaps a forum can help to mitigate it. I know I’d be willing to help with setup and moderation.
