Tuesday: Hili dialogue

January 27, 2015 • 4:33 am

There was supposed to be a wicked blizzard in the northeast U.S. starting last night, with some predicting it would be the most severe in recorded history. Public transportation, including subways, have been shut down in Boston and New York.  For those readers in the NE, let us know how you’re doing. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, there’s not too much snow, but it’s still cold. Hili sits on her jars and pretends to be Prince Hamlet:

Hili: To sleep or to hunt, that is the question.
A: I’m going to sleep.
Hili: In your bed? Under a warm duvet? I will cuddle up to you.

Hili: Spać czy polować, oto jest pytanie?
Ja: Ja idę spać.
Hili: Do łóżka? Pod ciepłą kołdrę? To ja się do ciebie przytulę.

  1. “Worst in recorded history?” It’s come to join me up in Nova Scotia and we are promised 30cm snow and ice pellets, 90km’hr winds and a wind chill of -25ºC. We call this Tuesday. I have sexy, sexy long johns, enough books to read and plenty of cat food, so all is dandy.

      1. The consumer of said cat food is ready for her close-up now. By the way, the storm has brought the deer that live in my garden out early, as bad weather usually does. See here, from my kitchen window.

    1. People in Boston are laughing at New Yorkers too. NY’s storm fizzled but I hope people took pictures of the deserted streets. It will look like the movie I Am Legend.

  2. I’m on the south end of it, so it’s not that bad, but the cat needs his vaccinations and I have class tonight so I can’t just stay in and avoid it. Hopefully the vet plowed out their parking lot.

  3. Best wishes to all those in the midst of the storm. Look out for yourselves, and others. Normally insignificant oversights or mishaps can become very dangerous.

I once experienced a “worst storm in 40 years.” In 48 hours 40″ (102 cm) of snow dropped on the plains and 70″ (178 cm) in the mountains. I was in the foothills. In the early part of the storm I was driving. Rather quickly the roads emptied. As I continued the roads began to disappear. Then my car overheated. I checked the radiator and it was full of green jelly. The wind chill was -40F (-40C!). I began to walk home, two or three miles away. I was in 60’s era USAF arctic flight line gear. Walking across the wind I was fine. When I had to turn into the wind it was almost unbearable.

Luckily, some kind soul in a properly prepared 4 x 4 was out looking for idiots like me and helping us out. He gave me a ride home. After all that I figured I’d grill a nice steak for dinner. I went out to the large clam shell grill on the large wooden back deck and attempted to light some charcoal. The wind made that nearly impossible. What I wasn’t paying attention to was that over repeated attempts, adding lighter fluid each time, the lighter fluid was pooling in the bottom of the grill.

It eventually caught. I retreated inside happy with the way things were going. Then I watched as, rather suddenly, the merrily burning coals erupted into a wind whipped ball of bright yellow flame about 4′ (122 cm) in diameter. Said ball was sustained, furiously, for a solid two minutes or more. When it finally burned down I went out to see what was what. Everything that wasn’t steel on the grill was gone. Not the slightest trace of wood, plastic or charcoal was left. No handles, no side tables, no emblems.

  4. I woke this morning to find our 14 lb kitteh laying on top of my side with his chin on my shoulder and one paw on my ear. Did not need the extra warmth (it’s in the low 60’s here this morning) but it’s always nice to be of use.

      1. Thanks. Next question: Why Dobrzyn? Does Jerry have friends or family there? Or is that where Hili live?

I once knew a guy named Dobrzynski, tho he was just called Dobzh by his friends. Does that mean he was from the town?

        So many questions…

  5. Still snowing, but looks like less than six inches so far. Weather Channel was predicting a total range of 5 to 11 inches for my location, while NWS had it at 14-24 inches.

Wasn’t sure who to believe, but it’s looking like WC got it right.
