A bit of anti-Semitism was afoot when I checked my email this morning, finding this message from one Gerard O’Neill (gerardoneill34@gmail.com):
I saw your blog the other day so I decided to look your name up on the net and…WHOA! You must be the ugliest Jew in America!! How did you even come out with a nose that big? Are you related to Barbra Streisand?
Anyway I sort of feel sorry for you now, small children would run away from a face like that. Good luck with the rest of your life Jewboy.

Why is it that bigots think that they sound so sophisticated and intelligent when saying stupid stuff?
Ach du lieber.
I’m putting on a pot of coffee.
Don’t you wish you could just laugh at such people? But you don’t dare take them less than seriously.
Especially when a significant proportion of tenured academics in the UK, hold similar views!
When you report people to Google, I assume you use the special email address for fellow important Jews to complain directly to the CEO?
/s
🙁
That may have sounded better in your head, sarcasm or no.
It was funny when Al Franken said he got “the Jew email” before 9/11, too.
It’s a shame you aren’t Al Franken then.
I am not amused.
Nor should you be. That is almost as anti-Semitic as O’Neill’s words. Humerous it ain’t.
Agree totally.
Not funny.
Agreed. I’d like to think the premise of the joke is s/he is satirizing the hater’s worldview.
This whole thread makes me very uptight! The fact that Jerry is a lovely person and that Jews are no better or worse than anyone else – these would go without saying if not for the twisted idea that things are otherwise.
When we are talking about physical appearance, race, ethnicity, gender, and so on, there is a huge potential for insult with the most well-meaning and sincere comment.
I suppose that can be true in any given conversation! Grania nailed it though: if you’re not Al Franken (or Sarah Silverman) on stage at a comedy club, better not to toy with racist or anti-Semitic humor. Maybe that’s just me.
Well, I must admit to thinking that sometimes joking about horrible atrocities/bigotry is a perfectly reasonable cope-mechanism or way of approaching sensible issues.
We do it all the time when the news get too depressing.
No doubt! It’s about time and place, though. And wording. And knowing your audience.
True. We have a word for it that roughly translates to “sense of situation”.
And it doesn’t hurt if there’s a bit of thought behind it, neither.
The phrase I’ve heard is “situational awareness.”
That would work, I think.
Gallows humour has a long and fine tradition. Sorry, a dulce t decorum history.
It is hard to get right though. A bit of a minefield, you might say. Could get shot down in flames all too easily. Could go down like a fireworks display at a Piper Alpha memorial. Probably best to leave it to the professionals. And medics.
on the brighter side: @Jesper, another hat trick for Messi!! Great game against Espanyol. (need to look up which city they are…)
I see that Espanyol is also from Barcelona…quel confucion (butchered Spanish)
Oh yes it was beautiful! The defence still looks a bit shaky, but with Messi on form we don’t care. 🙂
Espanyol’s defense was amazing during the first half. That 20-yr-old Ivoirean with the tall hair (Eric Bailly) is something else. You probably don’t get Ray Hudson as color commentator, do you? He is a hoot!
“that is another plate of salmon…”
Espanyol is a pretty decent side and 5-1 was way better than expected.
No Ray Hudson here I’m afraid. Our commentators can be a bit bland, imo. 🙂
How long before people figure out that humans are just human. No more, no less.
Feeling a bit depressed and angry” having spent the morning reading the Sunday papers, I decided to click on WEIT for something that might brighten my mood…..
He sounds like a recruiting add for the Aryan Brotherhood. This is the kind of guy that one normally thinks of as not worth the time necessary to follow what the says. And that is exactly the kind of guy to follow, because it is difficult to tell just what he may say or do!
I’m sorry you, and anyone else, has to put up with this BS!
I don’t know for sure where I first heard this, I think it may be a Zen Buddhist saying (or maybe it came from George Herbert), but I always think of it when I am encountered by such stunning bigotry:
“Living Well is the best revenge!”
Jerry, I suspect you are already there.
I pity the poor lad, Gerard O’Neill, for he knoweth not what he doeth and is unlikely to end well lest he first somehow find release in the noodly touch of the FSM…
I like your comment.
Don’t feel alone, there seems to be a Robert Jay Mathews resurgence just in time for the holidays.
This guy has not seen me yet.
That mail is just random :/
I’ve never understood anti-jewish sentiment. It is admirable that a comparatively small ethnic population has disproportionately contributed so much to the advancement of mankind despite all the obstacles other populations have burdened them with and the thousand injustices they’ve sustained.
I’ve never understood how “good Christians” could condemn the Holocaust and then turn around and express horror that a Jewish person might move into their neighborhood! It is attitudes like that….that are often just lip service too!
Ireland let Nazis into the country in 1945, yet refused entry to Jewish refugee children…
BTW, I always like to say “Jewish people/person” etc as the words/phrase “Jew” or “the Jews” sounds vaguely racist to me. Anyone else share that discomfort?
Yes.
Yes, I prefer that phrasing as well.
Myself, and others Jews I know, do not feel that inhibition. Shrug. I would not worry about it.
I think it is because racists use phrases like: the blacks, the Jews, the mexicans, and so on.
“The Jewish conspiracy” and whatnot.
Yes, that’s it exactly. Because of a long and unfortunate family tradition of southern Baptism and the racial intolerance that often accompanies the practice of that faith, African-American is the only term for that community that doesn’t sound like a pejorative in my head. I always refer to someone as Jewish or a Jewish person, rather than referring to an individual as a Jew. Which is not to say that I think someone who uses the word black or Jew is being intolerant, its just that my own subjective experience has rendered those words insensitive in my personal lexicon.
Funny, I never felt it was bad and Jewish friends do not however I do have one Jewish friend who avoids it.
Yes, me too.
They killed Our Savior. Haven’t you heard?
Of coursec that’s a tad difficult seeing as how in all probability jesus was and is just a myth. So much evil for a big pile of nothing.
This reminds me of a great Sarah Silverman quote (I think it’s from a Conan O’Brien segment):
It doesn’t help that in my life time Catholics have been taught that Jews are “Christ Killers”. Good grief.
The logic of that epithet has always puzzled me. According to Christian doctrine, Jesus had to die in order to save us from our sins. So the people involved in his death, from Judas on down, were doing the world a favor.
Yes & it’s why, if I were Catholic, I’d insist that my confirmation name would be Judas. He’s a hero after all – without Judas we all wouldn’t be saved.
Once again I see that Anglicans are just a poor copy of Catholics. You guys get to have a confirmation name? I didn’t.
ps. What’s it good for?
I’m not Catholic (born and raised atheist) but I have friends and relatives who are. They pick the name when they get confirmed. I don’t think it’s good for much. I just learned a couple weeks ago that they also have “sponsors” for the whole thing.
“Hi I’m Nicholas, sponsored by Toys R Us”
“Pleased to meet you, I’m Francis, sponsored by Pets at Home”
Is that the kind of thing?
The sponsors are there in case you try to back out …
Sponsors like in The Hunger Games? (I saw a few minutes of it by accident)
Ha ha! I forgot The Hunger Games had sponsors.
Not to mention that their god is supposed to be omniscient and omnipotent.
Something doesn’t quite add up.
Yeah, and the story would be less impressive were it “Jesus eventually retired to Arizona and died in his sleep for your sins.”
Actually, since he came back to life a day and a half later, jesus had a lousy weekend for our sins.
Yes indeed!
The RCC got away from that kind of Jew-baiting BS, at least temporarily, under John XXIII. He purged the anti-Semitic crap from Church liturgy — and even more crucially, he was one among few who could hold his head high when answering the ultimate question that every last man-jack to come through the Vatican during the last half of the 20th Century had to face in the mirror every morning:
“What did you do during the Holocaust, padre?”
When the big bugle blew during WWII, J-2-3 stood tall, like an Oskar Schindler-style Righteous Gentile, and found safe-haven in neutral countries for as many Jews as possible from his posting as papal nuncio (despite a dearth of assistance from the actual pope, inasmuch as the Holy See-no-Evil remained ensconced in Rome plucking Nero’s fiddle).
As in other respects, the Sixties began with a lot with a lot more hope and enthusiasm than they ended for the one holy, catholic and apostolic church. For the brief, shining Catholic enlightenment that began with Cardinal Roncalli’s surprise election to the papacy in 1958, the death of John deuce-trey in June ’63 was like Dealey Plaza and Kent State rolled into one.
I did not realize that John XXIII was so heroic in WWII. That’s good to know. Yes, Catholicism was so different in the 60’s/early 70’s. Or maybe I was only aware of the (seeming) liberal-leaning part of it.
It’s my understanding that the former capo di tutti capi over all things Catholic has in fact been formally proposed for inclusion in the “Righteous Among the Nations” honor at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Israel. Maybe one of this cite’s followers knows something about this process?
Like MLK and Bishop Tutu, like William Sloane Coffin and the Berrigan brothers, like the American Rabbi who had the rachmones to speak out in his synagogue with sympathy for the young American peace activist killed by an armored IDF bulldozer while protesting in Gaza — John XXIII was one of a handful of men-of-the-cloth I’ve ever had any stomach for, and that based solely on their social and political activism, not any doctrinal simpatico.
I agree. I admire the Jewish people a lot. Probably the most mistreated ethnic group on the planet, has, nonetheless, gone on to contribute far more to the arts and sciences than their numbers should allow. I cannot understand antisemitism and I always find myself siding with Israel (I think I’m biased towards them). A magnificent people. Can I add that I find Jewish women irresistible?
Saying that jewish people are better than others is almost as offensive as saying that they are worse than other people. All humans are human and each has the same assortment of strengths and weaknesses available.
Not to mention the nice reminder that half of all humans are objects that exist only to bring pleasure and eye candy to the other half. Not.
Where did I say they were better than other people? I said I admire them and that they’ve contributed a great deal to the arts and sciences. How the hell did you manage to find offense in my comment? Truly fucking baffling.
Where did I say that Jewish women only exist to serve as objects to please the eye? I said I find them attractive. Re-read my fucking comment and try harder to read what’s actually there.
By the way, “all humans are human” is a brilliant insight. Not.
Some Jewish people have Roolz, you know!
/@
JT, your response is intemperate, using obscenity several times. Please lay off writing in this tone on this site, please. Thank you.
Sorry Jerry, but I find professional offense-takers like Susan truly odious. I’ll continue to read your site but I will no longer comment.
It’s not a violation of civility to have an opinion about whether the members of all culture are, on average, the same. It is a violation of civility to rant as you did, using a lot of curse words. If you don’t understand that, then your lack of comments won’t be missed.
Learn to control yourself when commenting, at least on the other sites you’ll frequent in the future. This isn’t Porcupine Central.
Jerry, despite my existence as a “truly odious” “professional offense-taker” with “brilliant insights-not,” let me again commend you for demanding civility. Your website remains among my favorites for that reason and many others.
BTW, does anyone know what professional offense-takers get paid these days? Something tells me I not bringing in nearly enough. 🙂
Cheers.
I somewhat understand it–it always seems to me like a vile mixture of jealously, envy, and resentment. With probably some “it’s easy to pick on the small [in the sense of population size] guy.”
What always amazes me is how liberal so may Jews have remained in the face of all the hatred. Many of them reliably vote for social welfare legislation that will primarily help groups who are known for anti-Semitism.
Another great Jewish attribute–so many of them (Western Jews, anyway) are secular!
(Hope all my generalizations here don’t sound “racist”–I don’t like to speak of ethnicities in terms of stereotypes, even if those are primarily positive. But it seemed as if we were already going down that road…)
*so many Jews*
“I’ve never understood anti-jewish sentiment. It is admirable that a comparatively small ethnic population has disproportionately contributed so much to the advancement of mankind…”
It is clearly true that Jewish people have contributed amazingly to many branches of human endeavour but the comment makes me uneasy because of its potential to be interpreted as implying that racist sentiment towards a less high achieving group is somehow justified (although I am sure that this was not your intention).
To be quite clear, the racism that permitted the rounding up and sale into slavery of Africans or the herding of aboriginal peoples from their land to make way for white settlers in Australia and North America is just as odious as that directed towards Jews or any other group of ‘others’ that find or have found themselves to be on the wrong end of racist attitudes.
A disgusting cretin.
Yes.
“Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength” – Eric Hoffer
My father was Jewish (from Romania) and I’ve always felt an affinity for the culture. Antisemitism hits close to home. I’m sorry you got this piece of dreck.
I’ve always thought that anti-Semitism stems from some Christians and Muslims suffering from the dreaded psychological condition known as Jew Envy.
Reverse IP search locates him somewhere in the middle of Switzerland: http://i.imgur.com/rZa4jvB.png
Then he is probably using a VPN to hide his IP.
I’m not sure with Gmail (or any web-based email) that the SMTP is header is going to have specific locational information on the sender. Google knows (as does the NSA!) the IP address of the person’s computer at the time they are logging into the email web page, but what goes in the header of the email are the addresses of the gateways relaying the envelope.
Jerry’s facial feature is dancing eye brows… :))
When I saw your picture with your arms holding your knees up in the back of WEIT I thought you were kind of a cutie.
I had a colleague, who has a very big nose and he’s not a Jew. Once I tested if he’s capable to see things by both of his eyes in certain areas in front of his face… Obviously views are blocked by his big nose… :)))
I had an Italian friend growing up whose nose was huge – we used to ask if he gad trouble walking on windy days! Ahhh youth.
Ahh the love and goodwill of theists just warms the heart doesn’t it?
All sympathies: That must have been a horrible thing to receive, especially first thing in the morning. What a pathetic little adolescent scumbag O’Neill surely is.
No doubt his grandmother would lovingly approve. Truly, one of the most fortuitous conceptions to have ever occurred on planet Earth.
Calling someone ugly and saying their appearance frightens children is like admitting defeat on your first move.
If the Livefyre profile is indeed the same guy, his @unhiddenness Twitter feed and WordPress blog are pretty obnoxious, too – and he says he has Aspbereger’s
Seems to live in Rydalmere, NSW.
The Google+ profile for that email address doesn’t show much, and the Facebook profile that returns for that address seems like a different person.
I can’t make anything out of the email header.
He has a blog post saying Greta Christina put him on comment moderation at FTB – and he WILL NOT apologize!
I hate to imagine what he called her! Suspect he’s no fan of intellectually prominent women, either.
Jerry’s another facial feature is his small eyes in the forest of big eyes. :))
Above all, I consider a big brain is the most important feature of a male… And Jerry stands there, outstandingly. :))
I’m glad you publicize names and email addresses of such slime. I have no intention of contacting him, but it is good that these types know they cannot operate in secrecy.
Sorry you had to deal with that nonsense Jerry.
The Internet is kind of like Mos Eisley; you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I guess this douche makes up for the rather tame emails this week.
If by “makes up” you mean gives me my ration of sadness and loathing about my species, making me a candidate for Mr. Donohoe’s Happy Atheist Mental Clinic, then yes.
Cowards and idiots are plentiful on the internet. Even one or two of the morons that have commented on this piece are among them. I’m sure they will remain idiots and cowards.
Sorry Jerry. Gmail headers don’t contain the IP address of the originating machine.
A deeply unpleasant email and, it seems, individual.
The internet is a wonderful thing that is full of all sorts of treasures. Sadly it is also polluted by some execrable scum.
Somewhere a village is missing its idiot.
Here in Oz there was a comedy duo called Lano and Woodley and there was a line from one of their shows that goes –
‘If all the village idiots left their villages and formed their own village, of idiots, then it that village, YOU would be the village idiot’.
Very funny guys.
I’ve never understood anti Semitism either. I’ve always admired how many talented and brilliant people come from a Jewish background. Could it be some people feel jealous – they wish they had quality genes too?
That’s a big part of it. During the Middle Ages, Jews were forced into portable careers in Europe (such as banking, jewelry making and medicine) due to only Christians having the right to hold land and Jews having to worry about moving to a new home on a moment’s notice. Those careers became profitable and *BAM* envy by the very people who limited their options. (They also went into the crafts, which were less profitable, but when you want to hate someone you don’t look at those things)
Also, the church forbade lending money at interest, which became increasingly important for funding European trade and colonialism. So Jewish moneylenders were simultaneously necessary and vilified.
That’s how I’ve always seen it. And also why Israel is held to such a higher standard than their poor benighted neighbors.*
*-sarcasm. Although the contentious ones are mostly poor & benighted.
Yikes. That is all.
Anti semitism is a prime example of how religion legitimizes racism. Now, people might hate other ethnic groups because of economic competition, however, you sound like a petty jerk if you say as much (generally). But, if you can claim that it is for religious reasons, your hated is suddenly holy, blessed, even. It is a righteous hatred.
I still think that the majority of wars and conflicts are really about economics and resources (Marvin Harris fan here) but that religion masks that as the true reason, and as stated above, “legitimizes” many things that would otherwise be inexcusable. Religion also adds to the ferocity, and probably makes conflicts last longer.
I think religion is every general’s wet dream.
The soldiers basically recruit themselves as long as you know how to define an enemy.
That is very well put, I find.
I so agree.
When people say, “why concentrate on deflating religion, it’s really tribalism/racism/etc.,” the obvious answer is that you’d be removing the one supposed “justification” for genocide, etc., that seems to be held irreproachable pretty much world-wide. Remove the divine approbation angle and turf wars will be seen for what they are.
Is there a fault line running through Mountain View? Because something seems to be cracked there.
Mountain View is the location of Google’s servers, not the sender. Lots of cracks running through those servers, though, if that’s what you mean!
Esp. if you mean cranks.
I saw you on Conspiracy Theory Road Trip: Creationism (on Youtube) and you look like a normal guy. WTF with the big nose and why does a big nose connote Judaism? I have a friend from college who’s Jewish and his nose is as big as mine.
It reminds me of Brian in Life of Brian of the defense of him being Jewish as opposed to being Roman by declaring himself a big nosed yid. It’s life imitating parody.
In Life of Brian, Brian calls the Romans “big nose”. It’s one of my favourite lines because it’s so funny to think of someone saying that to a Roman solider.
What about when Centurion John Cleese makes Brian write “Romans go home” a bunch of times with the correct grammar?
Yes that is funny because Brian makes all the classic mistakes you make when you learn Latin. When I took Classics in school, I had a professor that gave you bonus points for writing anything in Latin or Greek on your exam, even it it were an Ancient History exam.
Many times I scored extra points with Romani ite domum. Once I couldn’t get my bonus points because it would mean my score would be over 100%. I think they still owe me.
Are you asking WTF because you don’t understand why a 21st Century human would use these slurs? Or do you really not know the history and tropes of anti-Semitism? Because a little Googling and someone can very quickly find out WTF!
I know the historic slurs but I have met enough Jewish people in my lifetime to find the slurs absurd. Hating on Jews and black people is so 20th century, if you want to keep with the times you’re supposed to hate on gay people in the 21st century. /*eyeroll*/
Such stereotypes just strike me as an absurd anachronism.
“oh come on, let’s go to the stoning…”
– Brian’s Mom
“He’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.”
-Brian’s Mom
and buy a fake beard along the way
But don’t throw stones until the official blows his whistle. Even if someone says . . .
Such vile comments strike me as symptoms of serious psychological issues.
I’m always shocked that the 21st century is still polluted by such irrational biases and hatreds. The personal attacks are a sign of profound immaturity and a vicious personality.
I thoroughly enjoy following this blog, and Jerry comes across as an intelligent, thoughtful, passionate and delightful person, the sort I’d be delighted to call a friend.
I’m so sorry that this piece of trash landed in your inbox.
Such a sad reminder of the progress humanity has yet to make. When a person like this lashes out, they only display their inability to grasp the subjects at hand on an intellectual level. The knowledge isn’t there, so they use adolescent-level insults instead. I would call Gerard a toad, but I rather like toads.
I’d call Gerard an ignoranus.
…followed by a rim shot that sounds like….wait for it…BUM dum da!
A rim shot? Hmm…
/@
Tee her, my joke works on a Freudian level.
Scraping the bottom, aren’t we?
Call him a cane toad because in Oz nobody likes cane toads.
Bloody ugly things they are and they are killing off a lot of animals due to them being poisonous.
A bit of evolution happening in regard to it though as I have heard that red belly black snakes are evolving smaller mouths so they can’t eat the big ones and so are getting less poison eating the small ones.
“Cause in the 69 my humpty nose will tickle your rear”- Shock G of digital underground.
I spend time on Twitter a couple times a week to shill for my blog and I’m always naively shocked with what people publicly record. The only positive thing I can say about an asshat like this is that he is stupid enough to pronounce his glorious stupidity publicly so we can all have a record.
Another lost human child filled with self-loathing. I wish people like this could learn how to love and respect themselves- humanity would be in much better shape.
Just this morning I downloaded Bonnie Weinstein’s new book, and started to read it.
On top of that, this.
And, icing on the cake, this past week was the 650th anniversary of the official start of the Inquisition witchhunts.
Too much. L
I bet this person is about 25, unemployed, lives with his mother, and has no friends. A perfect recruit for the local skin head, Nazi-type group, if there is one in that area.
Don’t believe that trope! A large proportion of academics in the UK hold similar views!
If true, that is tragic.
If true.
Oh my!
A large proportion? Can you provide evidence for that?
have a look and see how many support BDS! a not insignificant number!
Speaking of racists. One has just sold his Nobel Prize medal.
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/12/discoverer-of-dna-forced-to-sell-his-nobel-prize/383288/
$4.6 million for the medal and two manuscripts. Wow.
I’m confused: I thought I heard he was raising the money to support research. This article says he’s buying art (!) and giving money to institutions that have supported him, including UC. And he’s very excited to be buying his way back into public life.
It would be something if he could salvage his legacy but I would not bet on it. It’s just about impossible to un-ring that racist bell: there’s no way to spin or shade or clarify the things he’s said, at least not in a way that will stand up to scrutiny; he’s said it was stupid to say those things but has he taken them back?; and, can they be taken back, believably?
If Watson thinks he can change the subject and sweep the comments under the rug, he is probably in for disappointment.
“I’m confused: I thought I heard he was raising the money to support research.”
It looks like he was just mad at the world…
James Watson selling Nobel prize ‘because no-one wants to admit I exist’
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/11261872/James-Watson-selling-Nobel-prize-because-no-one-wants-to-admit-I-exist.html
As for his apology, the way I read it is that he only admitted that “you’re not supposed to say that,” not that any of his racist comments were wrong.
Okay, this is off topic. Can we please leave off accusing James Watson of being a racist now? I’m not saying he’s not, but I don’t want to turn this site into one where people are always being accused of various “isms”.
That’s the last comment on Watson here, please.
Thanks, Mgmt.
Just take his email address and subscribe him to updates from the Antidefamation League and the Jerusalem Post.
What kind of person not only thinks something like this, but actually makes the effort to send an e-mail saying the same? He’s the one kids should be frightened of – you wouldn’t want them at risk of catching his hatred, which, of course, is a cover for his own inadequacies. A very sick individual indeed.
I’m sorry you were subjected to this Jerry. Even though you know his opinion is worthless, this sort of stuff still hurts and makes one feel yucky inside.
Well, Dr. Coyne, you can join Mikey Weinstein in gathering idiot anti-semitic quotes. I do think that one book full of them is quite enough so I hope you continue with the science.
If you found that scary, you should visit Europe! Anti-Semitism is once again on the rise! particularly amongst academics!
Much of it is down to an appalling organisation called BDS, which most of these bigots support!
What a sad indictment of society that it can throw up these sad casualties who can only feel better about themselves by using the Internet to post abuse at strangers. I assume it comes from being indoctrinated with the religious idea that they are unworthy by virtue of being born.
What a despicable email comment. One can only hope this person keeps his nastiness online and doesn’t act like this in person. Sorry Jerry you have be subject to this, but your reaction is perfect.
Even the chipmunks are face palming.
http://whyevolutionistrue.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/270a6606.jpeg
Oh, wow, that’s perfect!
Look at those fingernails!
lol
Love it!
Love it – it’s perfect! 😀
+ many, Diana.
How on earth did you manage to post an image? I tried the img src=”” /img html, but it did not work. 🙁
You can just past the image UEL. WordPress embeds images now.
URL. Stupid small box and auto correct.
Thanks a bunch – good to know. 🙂
So sorry you have to be subjected to such abuse, Dr. C.
This just underscores how courageous you are, fighting the good fight and putting yourself out there, each and everyday. You’re a modern-day hero.
Your nose is just fine, there’s nothing wrong with it or with your face.
When people ask me (as they have done for decades) if I am a Jew, I answer “Are you referring to my superior intelligence or to my nose?”
Because yes, I am matrilineally a Jew.
See my nose. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a photo of my intelligence… 😉
Nothing wrong with your nose either…
That is just laughable, O’Neill must be about 14, or at least one part of him is, I wonder if his parents know what he up to? You gave it the response it deserves.. funny it was, although he deservedly could have done with more of a pasting. Unpleasant individual.
As on many other topics, Christopher Hitchens wrote presciently and eloquently about anti-Semitism’s unique pathology — of how it presents the perfecta of hatred and bigotry, combining the twin toxins of a loathing for The Other as a species of subhuman with a counterintuitive fear that The Other nevertheless pulls the hidden strings of a vast and powerful, yet unseen and ill-defined, conspiracy intent upon subjugation of the goyim and resultant world domination.
And (no Shlomo-come-lately, our Hitchens) he laid this all out even before discovering his own Jewish roots, while investigating the suicide of his mother.
