Finally, what is a day without a photo from Stephen Barnard from Idaho? Here are two, first an extremely cute downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens):
and then a black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus):
I can only think what Beavis and Butt-head would have thought: he’s licking her butt…he he. Remarkable how close the photos were taken; they can be daunting when you get close to them. Of course, they appear to be preoccupied.
I took the photos (iPhone) from my basement windows…. I would not approach a buck that closely. I would caution anyone not to get that close!

More than luck, is knowledge. That looks very much like a salt lick block in the pictures. Possibly the branches are also intended as browse.
Cows often have to share the blocks put out for them with other ungulates.
The downy woodpecker is cluelessly, pityfully cute! Look his dress! Black & white distinguishly neat! I like him! :))

Yep, that’s a female downey. The males have red at the backs of their necks.
So they’re rednecks.
I was waiting for someone to say that! The red is probably more accurately described as on the back of the head.

“Bonderøv” clumsily translates to “Farmer’s ass”. 🙂
That’s probably closer to “hick”. I suspect “white trash” is a new world phenomenon.

I dunno if it’s supposed to be a statement about phenotype or if it’s supposed to be about plain ignorance. Or lack of funds.
Language is funny, though.
I know many people in Idaho who consider themselves rednecks and are happy to be called one. When I was rennovating my cabin in Stanley and living out of a RV I threw a “redneck party” and it was a big success. You couldn’t tell whether some people were in costume or not.
Depending on the context I don’t think I’d find it hard to identify as one.
It might actually be fun just to ruffle some feathers. 🙂

Does anyone else see a bird head (definitely at least a bird eye) in the bark of the tree above the downy’s head? It’s like jesus on toast or the virgin Mary on a humid window.

The deer p0rn with the onlookers is funny just by their expressions.
Love the birds; I’ve fat put out for the downey’s but some of the other birds enjoy it too. The chickadees have been too quick for me to capture their picture so far. They dart quickly to the seeds, grab one & take off with it to a tree to eat.
I’ve noticed that behavior, too. They never eat at the feeder, but grab a seed and dart into the aspen to work on opening it. I think it’s because of their diminutive size — they can’t compete with the house finches and goldfinches.
