Monday: Hili dialogue

September 8, 2014 • 2:42 am

Monday again? The good news is that the Albatross 2.0 will be done this week. Meanwhile, in Dobrzyn, Hili schools Cyrus in Buddhism:

Hili: Do you believe in reincarnation?
Cyrus: I don’t know.
Hili: If you are obedient you will be a cat in your next life.

In Polish:
Hili: Czy wierzysz w reinkarnację?
Cyrus: Nie wiem.
Hili: Jak będziesz posłuszny, to w przyszłym życiu zostaniesz kotem.

    1. I just checked the etymology of albatross – I think it is appropriate!

      The OED online says:
“Apparently originally an extended sense of alcatras n.(possibly arising from confusion of the albatross with the frigate bird: compare alcatras […] with alteration of the first syllable probably by folk-etymological association with classical Latin albus white […] and related words, owing to the predominant colour of the plumage of many species of albatross”

So The Albatross has imprisoned Jerry for a good 18 months or 2 years – Alcatraz!

  1. Slip the name “Albatross” in the title somewhere! It’s apt & a funny inside joke for all of us!

Hili & Cyrus are BFFs now! ❤ Now if only world leaders could learn from them. Maybe Hili can teach them some philosophy!

  2. I’m very sorry to be the churlish contrarian on this light post, but most scholars think belief in reincarnation pre-dated Buddhism by a few centuries (in Hinduism) and there is some indication that Buddha himself may have DISbelieved in it, and tried to replace it with an alternative concept (though reincarnation persisted in classical Buddhism). Large numbers of American Buddhists don’t believe in reincarnation, especially those who overtly identify as “secular Buddhists”.

Caveat: Hajime Nakamura is atypical of scholars in thinking it actually originated with Buddhism (a minority view)
