      1. England is still alive. If Italy wins its last two games and England beats Costa Rica, there will be a three way tie for second place in the group and we are on to goal differential, goals scored, etc

        1. exactly, they still have a chance to lose against Germany!

          predictions:

          Costa Rica- Italy win Italy
          Italy-Uruguay win Italy
Costa Rica – England win England

Then 3 teams have 3 points: The goal difference decides

          1. Germany-England in the final is probably more likely than Germany-Brazil. If Germany and Brazil win their groups (very likely), they would meet in a semifinal. One would have to finish first and the other second in their group for a final matchup to be possible. So probability of Germany-England final is greater than Germany-Brazil.

          1. Never depend on others to be happy. Of course, having friends is good, but happiness (like winning) has to come from within.

  1. Luis Suarez had knee surgery a month ago and was less than 100%. I like this headline from a pregame story in Daily Mail:
“Luis Suarez will not be the player he was for Liverpool should he start against England in 2014 World Cup, admits Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez”

I assume he will still be warmly welcomed back in Liverpool for the next Premier League season.

I’m hoping his treatment by the English fans won’t be the tipping point in losing him to Real Madrid. :/

      His first goal was fantastic.

  2. Could be a double blow for Liverpool fans. The brilliant performance of Suarez may mean Real Madrid or Barcelona will take him away for a world record transfer fee.

  3. Congratulations Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Uruguay. Italy 1 x Costa Rica 1?

  4. As a Canadian I probably would have pulled for England, but I’m reading here that Uruguay is the most secular in all SA…Sigh.

  5. “We’re going home,
    We’re going home,
    We’re going, England’s going home”!

  6. Normally England scrape through the group stages by having a good defence, but its been obvious for some time that this is the worst England defence for 30 years, so conceding two soft goals wasn’t surprising.

Cahill is OK, but the best I can say for the others is that at least they aren’t as bad as Terry Fenwick and Gary Stevens form the 1986 team.
