I’ve heavily revised an earlier post on the television face-off between two Egyptian woman (one Muslim, the other a nonbeliever), and it’s now appeared in The New Republic as “Watch a salafi woman turned atheist get booted off an Egyptian t.v. show.”
Give ’em a click for the cause (I don’t get paid for traffic!).
Nice job, Jerry. This piece is a great re-write of the original post.
It heartens me that it will reach a wider readership.
Just three comments over at TNR so far – one rational, one insane & not even on topic, and one childish.
Fareed Zakaria has written about how much turmoil in the Middle East reflects a struggle between fundamentalist and reform Islam, or something along those lines. It would be interesting to hear his take on this interview. Are there a lot more who feel this way but are afraid to speak out (or even to answer a poll in a non-fundamentalist way), or is it an outlier?
There’s an Allah uh Upchuck spewing the expected there now. I let him have it, both barrels, point blank. We’ll see if he gets the hint….

Essentially: I could easily refute what you said but instead, please read what I already wrote. The stuff you just shot down.
Snort!
To be fair, the guy believes in flying horses. Sanity, logic, and coherence are not his strong suits….

Gave ’em my click; and it was well worth it.
You said “It’s quite startling to hear Sahid, seemingly a modern woman clad in Western dress, espousing chopping off the hands of thieves and stoning adultresses to death (of course she doesn’t mention the male partner).”
Just would like to correct you that adulterers irrespective of gender are stipulated to be stoned to death.. not just female ones
The fact that it is prescribed for both is explained here : http://www.onislam.net/english/ask-the-scholar/crimes-and-penalties/adultery-and-fornication/169991-how-islam-views-adultery.html?Fornication=
Stoning for adultery in not mentioned in the Quran. Stoning is not mentioned in the Quran at all as any form of punishment. That was an addition that Muslims added using bogus hadith. You think God/Allah would have mentioned it in the Quran if he thought it was a suitable punishment that fit the crime.
Good on you for lending your support to people like Dr Noha. Folks like her deserve all the support we can muster. She is a very brave woman.
