Punch in the presence of the moggie

April 29, 2014 • 4:17 pm

Reader John sent me this nice cat cartoon (there are actually a fair few cartoons showing moggies using up their nine lives at the Pearly Gates. The cartoonist appears to be Tim Hyatt, an Aussie.

Where did the “nine lives” myth come from, and why nine instead of, say, six? I’m too lazy to Google, so perhaps a curious reader can tell us.

And. . . cxciting news on cats to come!

  1. from wikipedia:
According to a myth in many cultures, cats have multiple lives. In many countries, they are believed to have nine lives, but in Italy, Germany, Greece and some Spanish-speaking regions they are said to have seven lives,[215] while in Turkish and Arabic traditions the number of lives is six.[216] The myth is attributed to the natural suppleness and swiftness cats exhibit to escape life-threatening situations.[217] Also lending credence to this myth is the fact that falling cats often land on their feet, using an instinctive righting reflex to twist their bodies around. Nonetheless, cats can still be injured or killed by a high fall.[2

    Oooh…you are evil incarnate!

Will the reader please to cast his eye over the following lines, and see if he can discover anything harmful in them?

Conductor, when you receive a fare,
Punch in the presence of the passenjare!
A blue trip slip for an eight-cent fare,
A buff trip slip for a six-cent fare,
A pink trip slip for a three-cent fare,
Punch in the presence of the passenjare!

    CHORUS

    Punch, brothers! punch with care!
Punch in the presence of the passenjare!

I’m not sure even this is enough to this one….

    Cheers,

    1. As a retirement present?
I’d suspect that ProfCC’s self-imposed defelinate status due to the abundance of travel in his life will remain after retirement.
      Besides, he did say “soon.”

  3. In Brazil the mith states 7 instead of 9 lives!

    1. For the superstitious minds, 7 and 9 are numbers with magical significance.

A “chat à neuf queues” (cat with nine tails) is a kind of whip.

        1. I am no psychoanalyst (and don’t wish to be one) but, in this case, I would bet that there is a sexual metaphor somewhere.
