Jerry Coyne soon to be neutered and taken to Christchurch

March 18, 2014 • 2:33 pm

Gayle Ferguson, Cat Angel™ for Jerry Coyne and his Four Sisters, sends another picture of Jerry and reports on his growth:

He reached the 1kg mark on the weekend!  All the kittens have been through a growth spurt!  This is him sleeping with his sister Molly.

Jerry (left, above) will see the last of his testicles either this Friday or next Tuesday, and after a short recovery will be taken to his Forever Home in New Zealand next week:

He flies in the evening of Sat March 29.  He’ll go in the same carrier I use to take them to the vet.  I can only just fit the five of them in there together now!

Gayle promises to send pictures of Jerry Coyne’s Big Trip.

  1. I have to say that when I see a headline like that arrive in my inbox my immediate reaction is to be alarmed — but then I get my bearings.

    Oh, poor Jerry 🙁

        1. I am neither an etymologist nor an entomologist, so I can’t tell you if this is truth or a bug, but I’ve heard tell that the words, “testament,” “testify,” “testimony,” and, “testicle,” all have the same root, with the latter being primary.

          Cheers,

          1. A long time ago I read an explanation concerning the historic background to the word(s) testimony/testify. I can not now pin it down, so I can not vouch for its authenticity, but here goes,

In the good old days, when “men were men” etc… the way you did solve disputes, or entered deals, who had said what, who killed whom, over what, the parties (the men) had to stand in front of each other, grab a god hold of each others … nether regions … look one another in the eyes, and, tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you…

          2. “the way you did solve disputes, or entered deals, who had said what, who killed whom, over what, the parties (the men) had to stand in front of each other, grab a god hold of each others”

Assuming that this is a typo, but it’s true on so many levels. Haha!

          3. I would have loved to be able to say that it was intentional, but you are right, it was purely a mishap, but I had somewhat of an “inspired revelation” as well, rereading the comment after I had posted it.

The downside being that it contained a brimful cup of coffee, which has rendered me a bit handicapped until my keyboard dried out… 😀

          4. All derived from the Latin for head and witness (testa, testis), which I would guess have a common origin.

(Though maybe, like English, they had many words that are superficially similar but have different meanings and derivations.)

Or like we have chopped up the Greek for head into many different words; and when we say, “head” it can mean the top, a protruberance, a reason/argument, etc.

      1. I must admit, I never paid enough attention to Baihu’s nether regions to consider such a thing. Do people really care if their neutered animals still have a fake package, so to speak? Just seems so bizarre…I mean, really? Cosmetic surgery on an animal’s sex organs? Like…ew….

        1. The shocking bit is that there’s a market for these things.

          And yeah, also truck nuts.

          1. …but, perhaps, you repeat yourself….

But, hey. If that’s what it takes to humanely control the population of cats and d*gs, not only am I in favor of it, I’ll even pretend to take credit for it being my idea in the first place!

          2. But they still wouldn’t be allowed to show their dogs, would they? I thought one of the rationales for the contestants having to be intact was the ability of winners to pass on their genes.

  3. I understood one had to wait longer to neuter male kittens. Is it fine to do it at this age? Just asking, although I know Jerry’s fate is already sealed.

    1. For quite some time, veterinarians have generally been happy to neuter animals as soon as they’re healthy enough to be unlikely to suffer complications from the surgical procedure itself. On the one hand, there’s no indication of long-term adverse health effects (even if it does slightly change developmental patterns, the animals have no increased morbidity) and it helps ensure that they don’t reproduce. That last is actually a far more significant health hazard for the animals, so even if there were minor risks (which there aren’t) for early sterilization, the benefits of reduced overpopulation would far outweigh any (nonexistent) hypothetical risks.
