It’s only a bit more than a week before Jerry Coyne, my feline namesake, flies to his new home in Christchurch, New Zealand. Here are some pictures that Gayle Ferguson, who saved him and his four sisters from certain death, sent me last night. She’s communing with Jerry, and will be sad to see him go.
Gayle made a spiffy flier showing and describing all five kittens, which she sent around to friends and colleagues. Jerry was the first to be snapped up; here’s his page in the five-page brochure:
And the second kitten, Poppy, was adopted yesterday, to a nearby home in Auckland. I wonder why the two red kittens went first.

The shot of feline Jerry with his tongue out is adorable!
Kittens will always be cuter than primates.
Thus sayeth Ceiling Cat.
Jerry has two weeks yet ’til he leaves me. We fly to Christchurch on the 29th of March.
If this is you, Gayle…allow me to say you did an awesome job taking care of JC and his sisters!
Great job! How kind and giving of you to care for these munchkins.
It’s always hard for a mother to let go of her babies, but let go we must. ‘Don’t worry… be happy….’
Well since cats are already evil (fluffy, cuddly, adorable evil) then since redheads have no souls, two negatives make a positive, and red cats are blessed?
I don’t know. I’ve always been partial to black cats and blue tuxedos myself.
Hardly his ‘last days’. Jerry Kitty is about to embark on a whole new career. His life lies before him! It may be the End of the Beginning, but surely not the beginning of the end.
Very top pic’s my favorite, but it was a hard choice!
I would love to see the profiles of the 3 other cuties; I love the way Gayle characterizes them, plus–more pics!
I will put them up as the last three get adopted.
Glad to hear that, thanks!
Cheers!
He looks so much like my sweet baby Morgan (who was cruelly ripped from me by the doctors that snatched me from the jaws of death.) It just makes me cry!
If it’s orange and stripey, it’s a good cat!
🙂
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that a kitten named after an atheist will be living in a place named Christchurch? Probably.
Belief in god is not required in the church of England…
If it helps, Chr*stch*rch Cathedral was one of the buildings that got zapped in the Chr*stch*rch earthquake. Maybe G*d has a sense of irony.
Absolutely not!
Christchurch is a wonderful place, IMO. South Island of NZ? Pretty darned close to heaven. And the North Island too, in different ways. Looking forward to my not-too distant return visit!
A little sad, but Jerry Kitty looks like he can do anything he wants…a good lesson for all people, that if they recognize that Jerry Kitty can do it…so can they. Have an adventure little guy.
Probably the orange tabbies got snapped up first because they have the reputations of being sweet, easy going & amiable kitties. I’m sure there are exceptions, but I have 3 orange tabbies and all are as I described. I’ve also had brown/black tabbies that looked like Jerry’s sisters – all great cats, but different temperaments. I’m trying to tame a stray male brown/black tabby who has been coming around by plying him with noms, and he is starting to let me pet him and scratch his ears. I want to tame him enough to have him neutered as the poor fellow looks like he has been in a few fights.
I have plenty of confirmatory evidence and not a single dis-comfirmatory piece of evidence.
Oh, that’s so nice of you to care for the stray. I’m feeding a couple of them, even providing outdoor cat igloos, but there’s an ogre living in the house who has forbidden anymore ‘rescues’ coming inside. So I’m not allowed to trap and tame them. I don’t 100% trust the local humane society here, as they don’t have a neuter and release program, and any feral/’anti-social’ cats are, very sadly, euthanized.
Squee overload! Very, very cute! I can just about hear their little peeping mews.
Good luck, lil Jerry!
Jerry and Poppy are adorable!
Good news and sad news both. And I’ll again observe that a kitten is the ultimate fashion accessory….

To Gayle Ferguson: What a wonderful act you performed by rescuing these kittens. I respect and admire you very much.
