Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
That dumb mutt isn’t a product of natural selection, but as for most dumb mutts they are artificially selected. So, he wasn’t smart enough to have evolved naturally, true.
My dog was smart enough to learn to ring a bell when he wants to go outside. He learned that trick in four days at 8.5 weeks of age. I would post some video, but I understand there is a proper technique required here and I dont know what that technique is. Another page on this site says, “Please donβt insert the URL for YouTube videos in comments if you can avoid itβa link will suffice. The URL will put the entire video in the comment, which eats up bandwidth.”
Ok, but I dont know the difference between a URL and a link.
That is a bit confusing. If you copy the entire url and post it here, YouTube will (infuriatingly) automatically embed. But if you copy it and then delete the http://, Word Press will restore that to your link when it’s posted but the vid will not embed.
Thanks very much for that info. Hopefully this works, lest I incur the wrath of Ceiling Cat.
He’s my boy showing his smarts at less than 9 weeks old. He just woke up from a nap so I figured he would want to go out so I started recording. Unfortunately, the vacuum cleaner distracted him which makes it look slightly less deliberate.
Here he is a bit older. When I dont let him out immediately, he’ll get more demanding by grabbing the string in his mouth and pounding the bell with his paw as it hangs below his “chin”. Annoying but effective!
I need to teach my dogs to do that when they want to come in! More than once I’ve let them out and then forgot about them; they’ll sit on the deck forever w/o barking or otherwise reminding me they’re out.
Mine learned very quickly to whack some sleigh bells with her nose when she wanted to go out. It’s very useful!
Thanks. π
If he gets any smarter I’ll get him to do my taxes.
π
I cant resist one more braggy post. He also likes educational TV and videos:
You could also use “a href” which will also not embed, and enable you to use whatever text you want the link to appear as.
It’s very cute, but I think that poor dog has been de-barked going by the strange noises he makes. Rather ruins it for me.
Oh, so that’s it. I agree.
On the contrary, Toby has a very robust bark. This is his speaking voice!
About the embedding – that was unintentional, and I think just a link rather than embedding would have been more appropriate. Not to mention just a single copy.
Apologies.
Glad to hear that about Toby, and sorry to have been too quick to assume the wrong thing.
FWIW, your repeated post didn’t appear for me until after several subsequent comments had been posted–very weird!
Same here with repeated post. Word Press works in weird and funky ways,,,
Hah! But “retch,” of course.
Just to be pedantic, it’s the cat that’s saying “Evolution is Bunk”; the dog has reach that happy stasis where to evolve doesn’t reap him any rewards…
Slightly off-subject, but I had to share this – according to The Guardian: Reddit asked Tim Berners-Lee about the one thing he never thought the web would be used for. His answer: “Kittens”
I bet – I just BET – that there’s a cat fancier’s club at CERN (where TB-L and cohort invented the Web).
However, I firmly believe the rumours of kittens being accelerated in the LHC are somewhat exagerated
I just had to post this dog-shaming video for Diana (it includes- toilet-paper sheet counting):
My d*gs were selectively bred for their beauty, not their brains. They are proof of humans’ supidity or perhaps of humans’ tendency to go “who’s a widdle wigglebutt?”
And you of course would never go “who’s a widdle wigglebutt”!! – LOL. AND I would never go “poochie poochie pooooooo”…no, never…or call my cat Frederick von Dinglehofer..
Nicknames for cats seem to appear out of nowhere. How else did I end up with Maiakins, Beebalo, Smallecules, and Impus-Whompus?
And all of them less picky about their food than Fuzzy, though we have no d*g for comparison.
You can call a cat anything because they will ignore all names equally.
My son has about 87 nicknames for our current cat. My favorite is Super Geedo Mega Puff (“g” as in generation). That must be spelled correctly because I am pretty sure that is the first time it has ever been spelled.
…not that cats are any better. My cat Xena will try to eat any small, clear plastic wrap or bag she finds. Sometimes she succeeds, with unfortunate consequences to her digestion.
Early experience is influential. What was in the first baggie Xena chewed? π
Proof of Idiot Design, at the least….
