      1. And yet, the person she wrote it for was a guy, so I thought, maybe it was for him to use to pick up other women — or use on his show (I think he has one) just for audience entertainment.

  4. 50/50. One of the cutest kitties EVER, but don’t ya’ think the singer was trying just a bit too hard with the geek chic thing? (Could be me, though; I’m an out-of-touch old fart.) The songwriting was very clever and worth several listens, but the uke playing, er…..needs some work.

    As an antidote to geek chic and mediocre ukulele playing, and a complement to witty songwriting, the inimitable Pops Bayless….

      1. When I hear Jake play, the world fairly stops, and I have to catch my breath. What is it about him, about his talent? If that could be bottled and packaged with every ukulele and handed free to every human on earth, he’s right: there would be peace.

        1. It’s the musician, not the instrument…listen to the FFRF podcast Jerry just linked to, and you’ll hear Kiri Te Kanawa sing Summertime, and it’s the same….

Lovely, but, having grown up in the south and seen enough of its reality, and then having visited Brazil and seem some there, too, I actually prefer an earthier version with a touch of the breathy Bossa Nova singing style and New Orleans bluesy-jazz rhythm. Maybe that’s just how I sing it, though, and nowhere near Jake’s talent.

      2. As I listened, I realized: Jake mentioned peace, then played a song with unsung lyrics about a murder — lyrics that echoes the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman situation from both sides interchangeably/simultaneously. Woh!

      3. Excellent! It’s great to see someone treat the ukulele like a real instrument and not just a prop. One reason I posted Pops’ music was because of the songwriting as well as the playing. Not to take anything away from Jake, or to even put it in the realm of competition, but out of genuine curiosity; do you know if he writes original music for the uke? I know that in addition to doing beautiful versions of “Rhapsody in Blue” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile”, Pops has written some really good instrumentals for the uke–a classical piece and a tango come to mind, but I don’t think they’ve been recorded. Time spent listening to either musician is time well spent!

        1. I don’t think original composition is Jake’s thing. Instead, he takes works that even non-musicians are going to think are impossible to play on the ukelele and makes it sound like that’s the only way the work could have been composed…which only makes it all that much more mind-blowing….

          1. And he’s sure gone a long way to rescue the ukulele from it’s “Tiptoe Thru The Tulips” reputation! (Nothing against Tiny Tim, but his version of that song didn’t do the uke any favors.)

  10. The blue thing at the top of her uke is a tuner. Got one just like it. I use it on my bass. It detects vibrations in the wood and has a cool readout. I always take mine off after I tune. Kind of nerdy to leave it on.
