I was born in the early ’70s and am a huge ’60s music fan. I own every Beatles CD, and much of the Byrds, Joan Baez, Dylan, PP&M, CCR, the Stones, etc. I’m STEEPED in the music and yet I don’t believe I’ve ever even HEARD this “monster hit” before. How can this be?

Same here. I was ten years old when this song allegedly topped the charts but I can’t say it rings any bells with me.
Perhaps I’ve accidentally slipped into a parallel universe where the history of pop music was just slightly different from what I remember.
I recognised the reference as soon as I saw the photo, and felt a distinct frisson, which only increased when I followed the link. Thanks for the memory!
