An amazing dolphin video

August 13, 2012 • 4:12 am

Matthew Cobb (via Ed Yong and Robert Krulwich) sent me this fantastic footage of Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) off the coast of California.  The action begins about two minutes in.  I won’t say more.

To make it large, and you should, click on the word “Vimeo” on the lower right of the video.

The Vimeo caption is this:

  1. wow, that’s awesome. Thanks for sharing! and music from one of my favorite movies/books!

  2. Thanks for the dolphin video. A bit south here in San Diego, pods of dolphin have been all over the place for the past two years. Makes me think somebody opened the gates at Sea World. They range from a mile or so off shore to well out at sea. In the 65 or so years I’ve fished off this part of the So Cal coastline, I’ve never seen them so abundant.

Back in the days when I used to fish off the sportfishing boats, you could get up in the bow of the boat and watch dolphin ride the bow wave. That too is an amazing sight.

  3. I don’t know why, but I found my eyes brimming with tears at the sight of those beautiful creatures; it’s not as if they are doing anything more spectacular than simply existing.

  4. I agree this was amazing footage of dolphins, which are amazing creatures. But why were they recreationally killing tuna, which are equally amazing creatures?
