Catholic bishop doesn’t know when to shut up: compares gays to Ku Klux Klan

December 29, 2011 • 4:21 am

The Catholic Church doesn’t know any better, and if if it keeps up these vile public pronouncements, they’ll lose members even faster. I hope Andrew Sullivan takes note of this.

Our local archbishop, Francis Cardinal George, was incensed because our annual Gay Pride Parade was scheduled this summer to pass by a local Catholic church during morning worship.  That’s since been resolved—the time of the parade has been changed—but the cardinal couldn’t contain himself and issued this statement:

“Organizers (of the pride parade) invited an obvious comparison to other groups who have historically attempted to stifle the religious freedom of the Catholic Church,” the cardinal said in a statement issued Tuesday. “One such organization is the Ku Klux Klan which, well into the 1940s, paraded through American cities not only to interfere with Catholic worship but also to demonstrate that Catholics stand outside of the American consensus. It is not a precedent anyone should want to emulate.”

Yes, the Church has been so oppressed.  Denial of freedom indeed!  They can worship as they please, and of course there are all those tax breaks. And really—the Klan?

When asked to apologize, the cardinal wouldn’t, but, according to the Chicago Tribune, did throw this sop to gays:

While the cardinal defended his Klan comparison, he also wrote Tuesday: “It is terribly wrong and sinful that gays and lesbians have been harassed and subjected to psychological and even physical harm.”

One of the biggest harassers, of course, has been the Church itself, since it officially pronounces gays as “disordered” and “sinful.”

A gay leader, Joe Murray of the Rainbow Sash Movement, said it best:

“It’s schizoid,” Murray said. “You can’t say on one hand that you love people and on the other hand condemn them for who they are.”

  1. The sooner these egregiously hypocritical lying parasites are imprisoned for outright fraud, the better.

  2. Ha! Condemn them for who they AREN’T, you mean! A guy isn’t a girl, and a girl isn’t a guy. Gay people used to be considered mentally ill (and were sometimes even burnt at the stake). It has only become commonplace nowadays because A LOT of people are mentally ill!

    1. Yup, a lot of people are mentally ill.

You know that religion was only given a special exception in the DSM, because it was otherwise indistinguishable from mental illness, right?

    2. And since gender construct seems observationally to be social, guys aren’t guys either – both some guys, some girls and some not so easily placed genetically are.

    1. To be fair, Rob, the KKK was generally pretty definitively Protestant and anti-Catholic, because of the nativism thing (although IIRC there were a few minor local exceptions). That doesn’t excuse the Cardinal’s remarks, of course, but he’s not just making shit up.

  3. Aside from just being an old guy who is having cognitive challenges, it is interesting to see how physically threatening challenges to ideology and other lifestyles can feel.

In fairness, on the parade, it seems wholly inappropriate that adults on floats in g-strings are doing pelvic thrusts in front of children and families. What’s that about!?

    1. Freedom of expression and from suppression, at a guess. Not more sexual than your stereotypical GC (Gender Correct) ad.

      1. Yes, kissing in public is beyond the pale. No hugs either, I guess.

[Actually there is a fine line. Thongs, nudity, kissing can be disturbing without even touching the sexuality & gender issues.]

        1. I see as few hugs at gay pride parades as I do at Mardi Gras. Both parades are disgusting when accompanied by humans shaking private parts. I think we are in agreement on this one.

          1. Here’s the thing. Clearly at the pride parades we have seen, in person, the minimal coverage of male genitals, genital thrusting and mock intercourse was dominant — along with young children and families watching.

If that were a hetrosexual parade, wouldn’t those displays be cause for arrest? Why should there be a difference?

Civil laws clearly cover these kinds of behaviors but why should there be exceptions?

          2. was walking across town, too gross pour moi…same gender bump and grind on floats less than no interest…seeing the kids, seeing all this was disturbing…sad.

          3. Clearly at the pride parades we have seen, in person, the minimal coverage of male genitals

Funny, the Pride Parades I’ve been to also included lesbians, but I guess that somehow semi-naked women aren’t a problem?

          4. Of course it’s a problem. Maybe at that parade only the men were being gross while the women had enough self-resapect to cover up. Obscene clothing is gross, gay or straight, American or Australian, man or woman, young or old. Cover up, people!

          5. The women were not as aggressively exhibitionist and sexual — why is that? Of course, biologically guys are more aggressive overall. Also, saw some research that same gender oriented men get more testosterone in the womb and thus throughout life and are more sexually seeking.

May be same for women, forget.

The idea that one should be able to be aggressively sexual in public with children present as a basis of political freedom and self expression is a interesting position. Suspect it’s just a minority who would defend this.

          6. Maybe at that parade only the men were being gross while the women had enough self-resapect to cover up.

No offense, but that seems a rather prudish attitude to have towards adults. Then again, where I live it is legal for women to go topless, just like men. (Of course, the weather generally isn’t conducive to lack of clothes for a good part of the year..)

  4. I just love this “oppressed Catholic” shit. WHO’S the ones romping around the world in Missionary groups, killing ancient languages and religions? Being paraded down halls in royal robes on national television? Give me a goddamned break. Why did the gay parade organizers change the time? Were they forced to? They should have stood by their time.

  5. The video of Catholics Come Home is apparently in agreement with the archbishop given that it describes the Catholic family as including every race, young and old, rich and poor, and sinners and saints without any mention of straight and gay. I started seeing their ads on TV in the last couple of days. The first one I saw was during the Kennedy Center Honors show.

  6. This is only sort of to the point, but I really dislike how ‘schizoid’ has sort of become an abbreviation for ‘schizophrenic’.

I know there is some evidence that there might be some kind of link between the two, but schizoids are not delusional and don’t suffer from ‘disorganised speech and thinking’.

Mind you, I don’t think this Joe Murray is even aware there is such a thing as a schizoid personality disorder which is seperate from schizophrenia, but that doesn’t stop his thoughtless comment from annoying me.

  7. The guy just sounds like he’s trying to defend freedom of religion. Why should gays be able to hold to their viewpoint whether they be American Episcopalian or atheist or Hindu or agnostic or Buddhist and not the Catholic Church be able to practice their religion in peace?

Also, it is participating in homosexual acts that are considered sinful. To assert though that this is homophobia (something I used to do) is actually a bad argument. Homophobia is an irrational fear of something. The Church lists reasons why it does not support homosexuality.

By the way, it could also be said to be against every human being on Earth though at this rate since it believes *masturbation* is a sin, hating people is a sin, racism is sin, everything is a mortal sin, you name it. And at this rate, we’ll never get any where.
