Meet a beautiful cat whose photo was sent by a reader wishing to be identified only as “reader—one who very much enjoys your website.” Thanks, reader!
This is a lovely cat, and I have a weakness for black moggies, so I asked the reader to tell me a bit about it. Here’s the reply:
His name is Peck. When I moved to this farm it was overrun with over a dozen feral cats, many of them in bad shape. My daughter heroically nursed them to health, had them neutered, and placed them. Peck is one of four kittens she kept and they’re all doing well. I’m fortunate to live in a valley of surpassing beauty, teeming with wildlife. I’ve attached a few recent photos from the farm that you may like.

And here is Peck’s gorgeous home, with some other animal denizens. Unlike the reader, its location is not a secret:
It’s near Picabo, Idaho, in the drainage of Silver Creek, about 30 miles south of Sun Valley. This is high desert that’s well-watered by springs, which gives it an unusual, even exotic character. The Nature Conservancy’s Silver Creek Preserve is just across the highway.

Wow, what a place to live, that is one lucky moggy. Beautiful animal, beautiful scenery.
That really is a piece of paradise – how lucky all the denizens are!
“Peck; Gregarious Peck. Make mine with crushed salmon.”
Wonderful scenery and animals. Would much rather live somewhere like there than in a city. Thanks for sharing.
So that’s what paradise looks like! Wonderful story and photo skills. Thank you.
Gorgeous Peck, beautiful place. Thanks
Great pictures, and a beautiful place. Reminds me of MT, where my wife is from. The Western US are an incredibly beautiful corner of the world.
Out of curiosity: I see a llama among the sheep. Is that meant to help guard the flock against wolves? Does anyone know?
The reader tells me this about the llama:
“Someone asked about the purpose of the llama. He does a good job keeping the coyotes away, but he’s terrified of my Border Collie.”
Thank you. That is very interesting. I guess that against wolves (particularly if a pack) a llama might be somewhat less useful. Wolves (and bears) are slowly recolonizing the Alps near where I live, and although related losses of livestock are increasing I haven’t heard anybody suggesting the use of guard llamas. Makes sense.
If they ever need a cat sitter, they can call me.
Yes, that is one very beautiful cat… =)
Thank you reader for sending these beautiful pictures for us all to enjoy, they made my morning! What a gorgeous place to live.
And a black kitteh in the morning is always a good thing.
Hoar frost – bootiful!
Beautiful place. Unfortunately, ID is full of conservatives and Mormons.
I’ve known several people who tried to live in the Salt Lake City area (for the mountains, rivers, deserts, etc. nearby) and eventually left because of the all-pervasive influence of the LDS church.
They said things like: Yeah, people seem nice but you never get invited over, ever.
I thought it looked familiar (I didn’t recognize the name of the town; but I’ve surely driven through it.) Been through that area many times. Just off the Snake River plain. Bigtime Mormon country.
Saving ferral cats is such a nobel cause,
saving and protecting our nature’s bounty
gives back some of the joy and beauty they
give us, what a beautiful series, especially
mister peck…….
