Take a gander at my hand in the the photo below, and then tell me what happened. Be as specific as possible, but if I have already told you (a few people know), do not post it. You have to guess. And do not say that I got injured: you have to be specific If you know about my doings, you will be able to make a more informed guess.
Answer will be up tomorrow a.m.
Bitten while feeding a squirrel. (Which has happened to me!)
Attempting to shake the paw of a Sciurus carolinensis….never a good idea
Errrmmm ..
Setting up materials to foster ducks…
Can’t tell what…
Maybe nabbed by a duck?
Sorry, I fainted.
Pecked or bit by one of your ducks?!?
I first thought you got married, but I’ve never been good differentiating left from right.
Nah, that is my right hand. And why would getting married give me a bloody hand?
Goodness, one would hope it wouldn’t! I intended no connection between blood and treasure.
For some unknown reason the ring jumped out at me, but as to the blood: if a critter didn’t get you, then shelling some nuts spoiled the food.
Sliced your thumb while prying open a walnut. Get well soon!
Cut yourself de-stoning an avocado.
Was “gander” a clue? Then maybe, bitten by a goose (rather than duck)?
sharp metal from a welding spot on a fence/railing.
That puncture wound on the tip of your thumb looks suspiciously like a squirrel bite. Robert Woolley is right!
My first thought was blisters due to cursive writing. Jerry was someplace where he did not have access to a computer, so – being a brilliant and compulsive writer – he pulled out his pen and pad and began to write furiously in cursive until his hand bloodied.
Did Honey bite you?
Cutting a bagel!
An ill-tempered drake gave you what for?
It looks similar to a paper cut I got once when someone grabbed a sheet of paper I was holding.
Looks like it could be a paper cut. Is that white object part of your clothing or the cause?
Bit by a duck. Really specific would be naming the duck, but I can’t do t hat!
Botany Pond Monster attacked you.
Something to do with wading around in the duck pond, perhaps climbing into it, trying to remove some junk tossed into it.
Hitchhiking thumb clipped by one of those outrageous extended mirrors. (Not serious 🙂 ). I’d vote for squirrel bite.
I got bit by a star-nosed mole once on an index finger and it looked very similar to your puncture-slit. Ouch! It was a bloody mess too. So I’m going with a lot of other readers’ guesses: squirrel.
Some funny answers though, lol!
Hopefully you’re up to date on your autism-causing vaccinations! 😉
I asked ChatGPT:
The insomniac blinked awake just after dawn, the room still humming with the restless thoughts that had chased sleep from them all night, when they noticed their right hand smeared with drying blood. It wasn’t much—just enough to startle, enough to make their heart skip—but it stood out starkly against the crumbs of last night’s Indian pudding still littering the bedside table. Outside the window, the ducks they fed every morning were already splashing in the pond, and a pair of bold squirrels skittered across the sill as if urging them to join the world. For a moment, they simply stared at the hand, trying to trace back the frayed thread of memory that might explain it—because between the sleepless haze, the wandering nighttime walks, and their fondness for feeding any creature that would come close, anything felt possible.
‼️
I would ask if you’d been nipped by a duck, but it’s the wrong season, isn’t it?
Can’t say I would have made the diagnosis. (Actually I can say I didn’t make it.) But if it’s a wild animal bite I’d guess the mechanism wasn’t feeding it. It was being finished feeding it before the animal decided it was finished eating.
In all seriosity, last spring I gave myself a somewhat similar gash, by tripping and falling hard on rough concrete, breaking my fall with my right hand. Only 10 stitches!
It could be that you have cancer and are taking capecitabine. That chemo drug damages hand and feet.
There are some very reasonable guesses up there. I will suggest that you cut yourself opening a bag of nuts for the squirrels. It probably wasn’t duck related since the ducks are gone.
You were feeding ducks and got pecked on the webbing between thumb and first finger.
I have to say, ever since the first time I saw you feeding squirrels I was afraid you’d get bitten. Did you? 😭
Coming in late and influenced by the squirrel bite hypothesis. But I’ve been re-reading Postmodern Pooh (Frederick Crews, 2001) Chapter 7 “Gene/Meme Can Covariation in Ashdown Forest” (“Renee Francis”) and so I’m thinking about Gorse bushes and there’s lots of Buckthorn in the Midwest now, so, well maybe you ran your hand into — this is too elaborate back to the squirrel bite hypothesis.
You can’t prove that it wasn’t MMR vaccine 🙂
Confronted by a protestor regarding [Insert favourite topic here] and got sliced by their plastic sign.
Looks like a bad paper cut
Bit by a duck? (Surely not…)
you got pecked by mummy duck
The ducks are long gone, so not a duck attack…
Canadian goose? Are they not also further south in winter?
Our host posted photos some time ago of him feeding the squirrels. My best guess is an over-excited squirrel, at the prospect of scoring a fat nut, who jumped up and the boss’s thumb got in the way.
Bingo, as per all the squirrel comments. More later.
You were attacked by a duck in a public park.
Bit by a duck.
A duck “bit” you.
Paper cuts. The right weight piece of paper can turn on you in an instant. Yes it can.
