Today’s Jesus and Mo strip, called “grew,” came with the email note:
Another one about that dodgy “blasphemy by the back door” parliamentary definition of Islamophobia.
I haven’t kept up with the news, so please enlighten me about the reference.

The issue is that the powers that be have enabled so much Muslim immigration into Britian (the latest news is another 100,000 Afghanis, done in secret), that they are now an electoral force. They usually vote Labour, but Labour is increasingly scared that they will form a Muslim party and start voting en bloc for that.
So, Labour is doing everything it can to indulge them, and what Muslims really, really want is a blasphemy law. So Labour is consulting on an official definition of “Islamophobia” that can be put into law and disallow criticism of that religion. The problem is, of course, that being allowed to criticise a religion is pretty fundamental to Western values, and Labour are not quite ready to abandon that (maybe before long). Hence the official definition of “Islamophobia” is stuck in drafting stage.
I had heard recently about the influx of Afghans. What apparently happened is that information about Afghans who were collaborating with the British Special Forces was accidentally leaked, and so they had to be evacuated in secret.
That’s the official line, but it’s dubious. Is it really the case that 24,000 Afghan soldiers were collaborating with our special forces? (Only a couple of hundred of our special forces were ever in Afghanistan.)
This seems to be coming to a head, boiling to a crisis in your fair isles, Coel.
I’m no authority and worry my concerns are from my twitter algorithm rather than fact. But it IS at least an important issue over there in Limey I’d say.

Something similar has been happening in Australia for quite awhile now. The current Labor government granted 3000 visas to Gazans at a time when synagogues and Jewish schools are being torched in this country by angry Muslims.
A few years ago an angry Muslim mob marched in Sydney carrying signs such as “Behead those who insult Islam!” Charming stuff. One wonders what sort of insanity motivates politicians in power to import large numbers of such people who are utterly incompatible with secular liberal societies. In this case I would guess it is just a craven way for Labor to get more votes from one of its core constituncies.
Mike – As an Aussie-American I read this story and hit the roof.
Growing up in Melbourne and Auckland, NZ in the 70s and 80s, multiculturalism worked.
Now they’ve gone and effed it up royally.
Of all places, Gaza. Of all people, the Pals who can barely tour a country in a tour bus without blowing something up. Want receipts for my “Islamophobia”? Here ya go! (or just turn on the telly any random decade).

To see the land of my childhood – which I don’t live in but have affection for, do this drove me bonkers.

The UK’s growing crackdown on free speech has now extended to floating the idea of a new law outlawing any criticism of Islam, which is getting a lot of pushback:

We should also enjoy last week’s Jesus & Mo, which didn’t get a mention here. It was a great one!
I was out of Internet range!
Does anybody know the geniuses behind the column/strip? Pretty brave people.
I get into debates with my several editors as to how much I can criticize Islam, but then I’m a known person and they have businesses and lives to protect. That said, they’re impressively tolerant of my what many would call my “Islamophobia”.
Except when Jihadwatch.org republish me, a late development They’re cool with that! 🙂 to wit: https://jihadwatch.org/2024/07/kindergarten-jihad-who-plays-the-beheaded
There is a HUUUUUGE difference between public perceptions of Islam and the reality of that faith.

Great piece, thanks for sharing!
It’s one person, who goes by the name of “Author”.
There is a rumor that the barmaid is based on Ophelia Benson. I believe she knows who Author is, but she’s not telling.
P.S. Terrific piece!
Thanks LM. Combined my column/s have a readership about the size of WEIT but it means more to me when people here read it. WEIT readers skew smarter than my broad public readership.
And I know many (ahem) WEIT readers by their comments here! Like you!

Years ago in response to the violent Islamic response to a Danish cartoon, a female cartoonist in Seattle published a cartoon depicting Mohammad with a caption saying something like “if everyone does it, they can’t get us all”. No one else was brave enough so she had to go into hiding with a new name and of course lost her job. So there is a good reason the author of Jesus ‘n Mo is anonymous and should stay so.
After the reaction to that cartoon, every newspaper in the world should have printed the cartoon on the first page every day until the madness stops. That would have been standing up for free speech.
Yes. A good one. Thanks for the link, Peter.
“Islamophobia: A word created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons.”
Andrew Cummins
(The term “Islamophobia” was invented in the 1970s by Iranian theocrats, to prevent any criticism of Islam and to cast secularism itself as a form of bigotry.)
From the J&M site comments:
Great comment! I will have to remember that one.
