  1. “Alright but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”

    1. Or as Fred Flintstone said when he was training to be a proper gentleman: “The ants in France live mainly on the plants”

    2. I would add baths. Of course, they might have already been included under sanitation and public health. Some more subtle gifts of the Romans might be long-distance trade and European unity. It is far from coincidence, that the nation mall in DC is almost entirely in Roman style.

A rather good history of Rome was written by Colleen McCullough. She is better known for the ‘Thorn Birds’, although she devoted much of her life to Rome.

  2. The nitwits who support Islamists because they think they’re striking a blow against “colonialism” are some of the nittiest of wits. Either they’re ignorant and projecting their own progressive values onto Muslims, or they just want to see Western civilization defeated at any cost.

Allah and his fervent adherents will subjugate all who defy Him. That should sit uncomfortably with people who hold Autonomy as a sacred, all-encompassing value.

    1. Yes, I’m surprised Mo didn’t start with “must destroy the white settler colonialists presently occupying Palestine”.

I think it’s both: they are ignorant AND they just want Western civilization defeated at any cost, despite the fact that for many of these nitwits (usually students) it is the only civilization they have ever known. As with all propaganda, facts are optional except to the extent they do not serve the agenda, in which case they must be fervently ignored.

  3. It’s good to remember that, when the hard left speaks about colonialism, that Lenin referred to Colonialism as the highest form of Capitalism. Thus, it is only something that the Capitalist West does.

    1. Both feudal and communist Russia were organized like colonial empires. They just never bothered to look for lands far away, because it was more practical to subjugate and control the many peoples of northern Asia and eastern Europe. Nikolai Gogol’s play “The Government Inspector” should be required reading for anyone claiming that Russia is a regular country just like any other.

      1. This is sometimes referred to as “the salt water fallacy”. It only counts as colonialism if you have to cross salt water to do it. Hence Russian, Chinese, Islamic etc etc colonialism don’t count as colonialism.

(Of course you could argue that the Arab and Turkish invaders did have to cross a bit of salt water at Gibraltar and the Dardanelles respectively).
