Bill Maher’s weekly bit: an open letter to Chappell Roan

If you don’t know who Chappell Roan is, she’s a singer/songwriter who recently became famous; you can read about here.  She identifies as queer and as a drag queen, even though she’s apparently a biological woman.

In this video, Bill Maher addresses an open letter to her. Roan has touted the virtues of open-mindedness, which Maher admires, but according to him she seems to get all her history from Tik Tok and is apparently sympathetic to Palestine and Hamas and sees Israel as a “colonizer”. Maher proceeds to give her a history lecture couched in Generation Z jargon. As he tells her, “you have it completely ass-backwards as to who is doing the oppressing” (of Palestinians).

This is more serious than most of Maher’s “comedy” videos, but he’s passionate about the subject.

  1. Well said, Bill Maher. Calling Jews colonizers in Israel is like calling indigenous peoples colonizers in the US…and the archeological record is there. Very well taken.

      most of the middle east and north Africa.

  2. I am sorry, I try to be open minded. I try not to be old and dated, but really, this is bad. It is shallow, mean-spirited, generic, it relies on stereotypes and tropes. It is not the least bit inventive or imaginative. It is not pushing anything, it is merely playing into safe ideas of what it is to be a good person today (ie antiracist, queer-minded and anti Israel and of course to sport some weird color hair).     1. Well I must be *really* “old and dated” because, until today, I’d never heard of Chappell Roan. Maher’s choice of photos depicting the various terrorist organizations was powerful. If that isn’t evil to the umpteenth power, I don’t know what is. Creepy. Very creepy.

      1. Chappell who? Just for laughs I put “Chappell Roan” through the Internet Anagram Server, and one that I noticed is “All Cheap Porn”. YMMV.

    2. Pretty hilarious example here but with extra steps: women (on OnlyFans) pretending to be men pretending to be women. The explainer video is short and helpful (but ofc very weird).

  5. It looks like we have two issues that many Democrats (and most above a certain age) and almost all Republicans can agree on: support for girls and women to have their own private facilities and sports teams against female impersonators who would infringe on those spaces, and support for Israel and Jews against those who seek at best to eliminate them from where they live and at worst who want to kill them.
