Thursday: Hili dialogue

September 12, 2024 • 7:10 am

A few people have approved of the streamlined and old-style Hili dialogue, without news, tweets, pictures, and so on.  I’ll try that for a few days, since that’s what Matthew did and some people liked it.  Writing the old, pre-Africa Hili dialogues was a time-consuming operation.  Weigh in below if you prefer today’s format, the older, news-laden format, or some intermediate. Thanks! But do send in tweets, as I can’t resist putting up some of them.

A truncated Hili, sans news:

It’s Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, and Botany Pond still isn’t filled. They’ve landscaped it nicely, but found several leaks that were supposed to be fixed earlier. Now the pond is largely drained again, and workmen are beavering away. I’m of course worried that 2025 will not be a duck season again. The pond has been inactive for about two years now, a situation I consider intolerable, and one that returning students and their parents won’t like.

Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is thinking deeply:

Malgorzata explains (Andrzej creates the dialogues with Polish captions and Malgorzata translates them into English): “There is just one Polish word for ‘limits’ and ‘borders’: ‘granica’. (Well, there is another – ‘ograniczenia”‘ – but it has slightly different meaning and you can’t conclude a treaty about ‘ograniczenia’ which you can about ‘granice’.) Hili is thinking about the danger of being tolerant to intolerants.”

A: What are you thinking about?
Hili: About a treaty on the borders of tolerance.
In Polish:
Ja: Nad czym myślisz?
Hili: Nad traktatem o granicach tolerancji.

Three food-related photos:

One photo, from D. J. Grothe, whose caption was, “I love Chicago.”  This is a well-known purveyor of Chicago-style hot dogs downtown; check out its webpage.

From Denny Zara at The 2024 Darwin Awards/Epic Fails: (it’s not really worthy of a Darwin award, but it’s funny, as magpies can be pesky):

And I must add tweets from Masih Alinejad and the Auschwitz Memorial.  The first tweet, which was retweeted by Masih, gives this for the translation from Farsi.  All the hashtags are identical to the first one that I had translated. This brave woman, like many others, was shot in the eye (and half blinded) for simply protesting the Iranian regime.

The fire of anger that was called #مهسا_امينی‌‌ [“woman, life freedom”] came to life, ignited and gave life to the revolution #زن‌_زندگی_آزادی , a revolution that echoes around the world. The story is the story of wounds whose healing is fruitful struggle Wounds that tell the story of crimes against humanity Wounds that stood up to be flag bearers #زن‌_زندگی_آزادی .

Here’s one I retweeted:

A tweet from reader Simon about the debate:

  1. If you have the time and energy, please keep the full Hili Dialogue going. It’s a major part of my daily entertainment.

Thank you for all your hard work!

      1. +1
I like the full set. I very much appreciate what you do and cannot seem to start my day without full Hili dialogue. It’s the only religion I practice-

    1. A big ditto from me. I love the extra news. It is super informative and provides an important aspect or interpretation of current affairs especially for the nonAmericans.

  2. An idea might be the Hili Dialogue as a preface, alone, then the immediate next post the invaluable blast through the news and all… the same, but different…?

What’d that be, after a dialogue, comes the … Hili Symposium? Hili Agora?

  3. The Hili Dialogue is essential reading for me every morning and thanks for all your hard work. I missed it while you were in Africa.

  4. I’d be happy whichever way you go. However, if you go the shortened route, perhaps invite readers to add news items they find interesting.

  5. I prefer the full dialogue, but a truncated version which occasionally explodes into unexpected abundance is also appealing.

  6. Dr. Coyne, I used to like the full dialogue version, it felt like a mental breath of fresh air each day. I did everything I could not to miss reading it. However, for me, the dialogue seemed to change in flavor overtime, and unfortunately I found myself clicking on it and sighing before even reading. The joy each morning was gone.

I don’t know what else to say. Other than, thank you so much for all you’ve done and do with your daily dialogue which you provide. Take care.

  7. HAHAHA!
    Magpies are MONSTERS!
They terrorized my cat and my Dad growing up in Australia. Like crows they can individualize their rage which always impressed me. Not ANY human, just Dad. Not any cat, just my cat (who always slinked under the eaves to avoid death from above!).
That said, despite that, I do adore all the corvids.

  8. If you have the time and energy, I hope you’ll keep doing the full version of Da Nooz. You bring together perspectives on important issues that I don’t think I would otherwise be exposed to.

  9. I missed the full morning dose of Jerry Coyne while you were gone, and would welcome its return.

  10. Oh, my goodness. Funny memes today! In my neck of the woods it’s the mockingbirds that terrorize cats, people, hawks ten times their size… I had one divebomb my head one day. They’re freaking maniacs.
As for the Hili Dialogue, so long as “top cat” gets the love and attention she deserves (from us, I mean… we know she rules the roost in Dobrzyn), it’s all perfect! Short, medium or long. I always appreciate it.

  11. I am a big fan of the old style Hili dialogues.
No where else do I see any news of the women being blinded in Iran.
The hot dog sign today saying “immigrants eat our dogs” was ingenious😂.
    Keep it going!

  12. I enjoy the full version, so whatever you are willing to provide. I like the laughs and while the Auschwitz Memorial photographs are certainly heartbreaking, they are also a good daily reminder of why we must keep paying attention, even when we would prefer to drift off into dreams (and photographs) of Africa.

  13. I read Da Nooz daily and missed it while you were in South Africa. Full version Hili, Israel news, and science posts are most important to me and I greatly appreciate the work you put into them.

  14. I prefer the full version of Hili dialogue, as some others has stated, reading it has become an important part of my day, thank you for your hard work.

  15. The full Da Nooz-version is very useful to me as a South African (i.e. non-American) as it gives me lots of info and insight into American news/politics. Of course, I am in awe of the quality and volume of your writing, and especially your interpretation thereof. Only you can be the judge of how much time and energy you wish to invest, but rest assured that it is highly valued!

One idea to consider could be a mix of long and short styles: a Monday weekend review, and a Friday (or Caturday) summary of the week’s salient events. It could lessen the load.

  16. i strongly prefer the full Hili dialogue. While the Hili part is great, it rarely sparks much response. I was dismayed to see that most of the abbreviated Dialogues had only a few comments, and most of those comments didn’t trigger conversations. What has kept me coming back for over 12 years, along with PCC(e)’s stellar content, are the conversations in the comments. The Dialogues are home to conversations on topics that PCC(e) doesn’t want to treat as a full-blown post. i’d be very sad to see those conversations fade away.
